Responsible tourism: Croatia self guided walking holiday, Dubrovnik and Marco Polo island
Our local partners in Croatia prioritise responsible, sustainable travel in all levels of the business. They use recycled paper and any waste generated is recycled wherever possible. The majority of correspondence, promotion and marketing is carried out electronically, minimizing the quantity of paper used. They have also been involved in supporting a number of local ecological associations and staff were directly involved in the planting of pine forest trees in Dubrovnik after the fire in 2007.
The tour is normally offered on a self-guided basis, with occasional small, guided-group departures. Small groups minimize the impact on the environment and community. Furthermore, as the tour is suitable for spring, summer and autumn visitor numbers can be further dispersed throughout the year. The majority of the tour is on foot, a great way to enjoy the country with minimal environmental impact, however, where transfers are required, modern, efficient vehicles are used to ensure the area stays cleaner. We choose accommodations with good environmental practices such as recycling and water and energy conservation.
Water is a precious commodity in the area, especially on the islands Sipan and Lastove, so guests are encouraged not to waste water, and to be careful when showering and washing. Guests are also asked to conserve energy and minimize waste where possible, stick to the trails, and not to take or damage any plants or flowers.
Local staff, services and guides are employed ensuring that the community benefits economically from tourism, and from employment created in the area. Our local guides are also the best qualified to inform guests on the tour about local culture, history and traditions. We stay in locally owned and run guest houses, cottages and apartments, and where provided, local dishes and delicacies are served, from locally sourced produce.
There are plenty of opportunities on the tour to visit small, locally owned shops, restaurants and servicesin Dubrovnik and other villages, to further support tourism and business in the area. We visit small, organic wine producers, small family owned restaurants such as restaurant Kod Marka in Sipan, serving local dishes and any service providers that offer traditional products, ensuring that the money stays in the community.
Guests are asked to remember that the holiday destination is home to many local people and to be respectful of this, and to also learn some Croatian words in order to enhance the trip and greet people.
