Responsible tourism: Alaska small ship cruise, USA

Accommodation & Meals:
The majority of this trip is spent on board the Island Odyssey, a 68ft motor-sailer. Our first and last night will be spent in small local hotels. We predominantly use small businesses for accommodation in order to keep investment local and benefit the communities we visit directly.
Almost all meals are provided and the cook on board the Island Odyssey will endeavour to use local produce wherever possible. All meals are served buffet style allowing guests to take only what they wish to eat rather than a pre-determined amount. Our cooks have a great deal of experience providing accurate quantities of food and any leftovers are used the following day in soups and stews or reinvented in another manner to minimize waste as much as possible. Typically meals will include plenty of fresh seafood; one of the highlights of the trip is that we can catch our own!

Being predominantly a wildlife based tour, we are very conscious of our effects on the environment and how we can reduce negative impact and aid conservation. We feature excellent naturalists that are able to share their knowledge about the rich biodiversity found in the areas we visit. Nature walks with interpretation by our naturalists occur daily, and a Nature Diary is kept detailing the flora and fauna seen on each trip. Our naturalist guides also identify and record whale sightings and share the information with whale researchers.
All of our local crew have received Bear Safety training. A briefing is conducted with guests prior to bear viewing excursions to ensure we do not cause stress to the bears and that we are not demonstrating any behaviour that could cause them to associate our presence with a food source.

On board the Island Odyssey Gojo Greenseal hand soap is provided in the bathrooms, an environmentally friendly product. There is also limited water capacity on board (with filling stations few and far between) and as a result guests and crew are actively encouraged to limit showering and conserve water.

Local Partner:
Our local partner belongs to 1% For the Planet, a global alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet. Each year they donate 1% of their profits to conservation organizations working to preserve the British Columbian coastline. In addition, our local partner is a Gold Member of Green Tourism Canada. They are a Carbon Neutral Company and have won awards based on their sustainability standards.

UK office:
It all starts at home so we have first worked at reducing our carbon footprint in our UK offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.
