Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Northern Lights and wildlife holiday, Norway

Our trip to this tiny and beautiful region in Northern Norway, our commitment to responsible tourism is shown in a variety of ways.

Firstly with regards to environment, the hotel that is the base for this trip is over 100 years old, dating back to 1908. In using this building, we are helping to support and promote a building which has become a part of the cultural background of Sortland. The hotel has hosted Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun, and has dedicated is restaurant to local Norwegian author Lars Saabye Christensen. Undergoing a recent refurbishment, the building itself is also dedicated to environmentally friendly policies such as reducing energy usage and preserving water

With regards to wildlife, we have included a RIB safari to hopefully allow guests to witness whales in their natural environments. Through not actively pursuing the whales, and more hoping to witness them, their conservation in encouraged and they are not disturbed from their habitat. Activities such as this also help to encourage the children on the trip that animals should be viewed in the wild as much as possible.

When focusing on community the hotel remains an important local employer in a remote community so plays a key economic role within the town of Sortland as well as offering fair wage to its employees. Our guides too on this trip are usually local residents’ and we believe in the importance of promoting and utilising the important experience and skills of the local community we base our holidays in.

This trip also includes a visit to a nearby Sami Homestead and reindeer herd thus helping to sustain cultural attractions. Reindeer herding dates back centuries and in parts of Norway is reserved as an occupation solely for Sami people, thus helping to preserve an important culture and key economic role that the Sami people have always traditionally occupied. With this excursion, we are encouraging guests also to buy local crafts and souvenirs and further support the family who own and run this homestead.
