Small group adventure holiday
This is a 'small group adventure' - on our group trips you'll be with a maximum of 11 like minded travellers and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends it's good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting people from other parts of the world as well as seeing new places!

Because of our small group size, we're able to guarantee departures for all of our trips. Once you have booked and paid your deposit, your trip is guaranteed to go!

How this holiday makes a difference

Environment:
- We provide all travellers with reusable bags and chopsticks in order to avoid waste
- Encouraging use of “tea flasks” for drinking water (or tea, like the locals do!) so as not to purchase multiple plastic bottles. Safe drinking water available in all our accommodation and transport. Any bottles that are purchased are given to the community of waste collectors who rely on this for an income
- All suppliers issued with RT recommendations in their local language and leaders and groups act as “ambassadors” for spreading the RT message beyond just our travellers but also trying to involve the local tourism industry.
- Wherever possible we take local transport in China. This can mean anything from public bus, trolley bus, tram or subway. We also have the opportunity to explore on bikes and on foot and travel overland on all our basix trips

Community:
- Food left over after group meals is collected and boxed up to be left where homeless/street people might easily find it and take it without them having to go through garbage for a meal
- Include informal local language lessons to give our travellers a head start into understanding the culture and communicating with the people we meet along the way
- When taking trains we travel 2nd or 3rd class (hard sleeper in China) which is the way the majority of locals travel - this gives us maximum chance to meet and share stories, food, games and the journey with local travellers
- At the end of out journey we encourage our travellers to donate unwanted clothes, toiletries or other goods which we then distribute to local organisations

On this trip you are joined by a leader and many local guides along the way who are always eager to share their country and culture, and help you break down barriers in your interactions with local people. Our tour leaders are all Chinese locals.

During our stay in Xian, you will have the opportunity to visit Huiling, a Chinese-run charity which provides support and education for young adults with disabilities. Lunch is provided and the students are always very excited to perform some traditional dances and show off their skills.

We show our support for conservation in China by an included visit to the Giant Panda Reserve in Chengdu, where all money received from entrance tickets is put towards conservation of this endangered species through research, breeding, rescue and education.

There are also plenty of opportunities to visit markets, whether to shop for a cooking class, bargain for a souvenir, or taste a local delicacy at a night market. These times give you a great opportunity to interact with the locals and enjoy the smells and colours of the country.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The visits to the pandas in Chengdu, the gardens in Shangai, the Terracotta Warriors in Xian and the Great Wall plus the cooking and handicapped schools visit and acrobatics shows.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Do not go until April when the weather should be warmer as there is not much exercise to keep you warm in what can be very cold and damp weather.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The operator went overboard to provide chinese meals but the standard can vary so more variety would be better. The cruiser on the Yangtse River was below standard and inadequate for cold weather as it had no heating and suffered from damp. The operator has compensated us for this failure.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was advertised as a comfort trip covering a very large area and largely city based. The hotels were very good and well placed and the internal flights and soft sleeper trains added to the quality of the tour. The food, the boat trips and the weather could have been better.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The walk along the Great Wall was terrific. Also the cycle ride in the country. Terracotta army of course. Having Nicole as our guide was an enormous plus. She was extremely helpful. I had to visit hospital with an infected leg and she was there all the time with me - and she was also very hard working and good company. I thought that as a vegetarian the food might be limited but Nicole ensured I had extremely tasty and varied food.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be ready for any weather - our weather was colder and wetter than forecast. The nights in the monastery were cold and the smaller one rather damp for me at least. Also prepare yourselves for really bad air pollution so that you may rarely see the sun/stars/moon etc - it may be that the weather conditions made this particularly bad while we were there but it was quite depressing.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Travelling by train was good - also eating in local restaurants and using local guides. I would have liked the opportunity to discuss environmental issues - in particular the very obvious air pollution which the Government recognised but we found very little signs of local recognition or action.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Well worthwhile - for a first look at an enormous and complex country. I would have welcomed the chance to interact more with local people - or have the option to visit a workplace/environmental project etc rather than one of the tourist attractions. Unfortunately our time in Beijing coincided with a national holiday so we could not visit the charity for disabled people.
