Volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.

How this holiday makes a difference

This project is run in the host country by an Indian organisation that is operational in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The organisation was founded in early 2005 with a goal to support sustainable human development by promoting volunteering and rural and responsible tourism in India. The organisation tries to bring benefit to both society and the volunteers. The efforts of our volunteers represent a vital contribution to our community, as by helping on the projects the volunteers share their energy and time with the people and as a result experience Indian culture first hand. The projects not only give you an opportunity to give back to society but also present you with an opportunity to learn a new language, a new culture and a new way of life. The organisation was established with a mission to humanize every child, possible only through education. As we all know India is a developing country and although the country has gained remarkable progress so far, there are still certain regions that remain unchanged. The staff and the volunteers are expected to put all their energy, enthusiasm and knowledge into their work so that these goals can be achieved.

Volunteer teams will make invaluable contributions to local communities’ livelihoods, infrastructures, education facilities and health care facilities. The communities that the organization works with are some of the poorest in the region and despite Government concern, the schools and child care centres in the villages are not well maintained. By devoting their time, energy and expertise, the participants, not only maintain the existing buildings but also develop new facilities around them, which would otherwise be difficult for the communities to achieve single-handedly.

Together as a team we set out to focus on improving the facilities for the communities we have been assisting throughout the year on our community development programs. These short term volunteer projects put together teams of like minded volunteers for a few weeks at a time to come out and help us improve our project partners’ facilities, be it the schools we work in, the local health clinic, orphanages, child care centres, sports field, arts centre or community centre. It is a great opportunity to make a real difference in a short amount of time.

Together with our local partners we support sustainable human development by promoting volunteering and rural and responsible tourism in India. We try to benefit both society and the volunteers. The efforts of our volunteers represent a vital contribution to the community, as by helping on the projects, the volunteers share their energy and time with the people, and as a result, experience the Indian culture first-hand. Volunteering on this project, not only gives you an opportunity to give something back to society, but also to experience a new culture by working alongside local community members.

Renovating, painting and white-washing in schools, orphanages and child care centres, helping with sanitation by building common toilets, developing and refurbishing sports fields, helping the poor in constructing houses, cleaning the village area, planting trees, developing garbage facilities, learning Hindi language, participating in health campaigns, getting involved in workshops are all things that volunteers participate with.

All materials, local craftsmen salaries and professional advice are covered by us though we actively encourage local community involvement to create a sense of ownership. We are dedicated to responsible tourism, and all of the projects that we support directly benefit the environment, the local community, or both. All projects are carefully chosen to offer our volunteers sustainable and responsible travel, with specific attention being paid to their involvement in the sustainability of all their practices / project goals.

All of our projects and expeditions issue the participants with clear guidelines on responsible tourism and ecotourism, all specific to the particular environment / region. These cover a number of issues, ranging from waste disposal in remote areas, recycling materials and buying from local businesses to not exploiting the area’s wildlife or harming the environment.

Story of the thingstodo provider

The owner of this company did a gap year trip in the early 90s which involved building a bandstand for a small village in Patagonia. While he was there, he realised the project was only helpful in developing the Western traveller as the village didn’t want a bandstand and only argued about who owned it. And so he set up a volunteer organisation which is useful to communities and provides them with resources and help with funding. Today, his projects offer travellers an opportunity to fully integrate into communities and to make a real long-term difference to the local people’s lifestyles.
