Responsible tourism: Costa Rica tailor made tour, captivating Costa Rica
As Latin America specialists, we are the official travel partner of ArBolivia Project, a reforestation initiative which takes a business approach and splits the profits from timber revenues equally with farmers, rather than exporting most of the profit overseas. This way, the project is far more likely to be sustainable, and ultimately successful, by addressing social and environmental problems with a business solution.
The accommodation we offer to customers has been built with a minimum impact on the surrounding forests and rivers. For example, in Pacuare Lodge no trees were cut to accommodate the bungalows and main lodge, which are built of lumber from a reforestation project run by small farmers. The thatch roofs were made by local Cabécar Indians in their traditional style using palm leaves collected in the forest reserve. Bathrooms are equipped with biodegradable soap and shampoo and the water for their showers is solar heated. All the lodge’s wastewater flows into state-of-the-art septic systems to avoid pollution of the nearby river.
We ask our visitors to ensure that their dress and behaviour is in line with socially acceptable limits within the area they are visiting. They should be especially sensitive about taking photographs and interaction with children. If they are in doubt about what is / is not acceptable they can check with their guide, driver, hotel staff or our office. We teach visitors that giving directly to children encourages begging and can undermine parents who cannot afford to give their children such items. If visitors must give gifts we encourage useful items - pens, paper, clothing, etc. We are always happy to channel donations to needy organizations. We encourage visitors to learn a few simple words and phrases of Spanish before their visit. Even the simplest words and phrases will go a long way in allowing them to interact with the local people. And, no matter how little they know, it's always appreciated.
