Responsible tourism: Cuba tailor made tour, in depth
This tour is run on a private basis meaning that it does not involve the usual impacts on the environment that are associated with large group tours. Transfers are provided by using existing taxi companies, to ensure that there is no demand for increased numbers of vehicles on the road (this being a particularly pertinent problem in Cuba).
When selecting recommended hotels, we opt for those with the best environmental policies, focused on preserving water, recycling waste and limiting electricity usage. Cuba is famous for its vibrant cities, but on this tour we take guests to more off the beaten track destinations, including rural regions and national parks. The money from these visits helps to support conservation initiatives and we are careful to advise guests on the importance of a 'leave no trace' attitude when visiting the countryside in Cuba. Guests should stick to designated paths and not damage or take home any natural artefacts.
We support community initiatives that help improve the lives of the local people in the places we visit. For example, a significant percentage of the profit generated by the Habaguanex group of hotels is allocated to the rescue of Havana's historical heritage. Our selected accommodations employ primarily local staff.
These members of the team grew up and studied in Cuba, and are raising their families there, meaning local communities directly benefit from employment opportunities in the tourism industry. Guests will notice this during their stay in Cuba - there is a real sense of everyone working together to make improvements for the future.
We do not encourage the development of chain hotels within a fragile economic environment like Cuba's, and therefore we always recommend small scale, locally owned boutique hotels that provide plenty of character and charm. By supporting small businesses we are helping the tourism industry in Cuba to grow in a responsible and sustainable way, where local communities benefit.
