Responsible tourism: Antarctica photography cruise

Environment

We frequently monitor the social, economic and environmental impact of our travel operations to ensure we are at the forefront of a sustainable and ethical tourism industry.

We ensure respect for wildlife and the environment is paramount and as such we advise the following:

Do not feed, touch, or handle birds or seals, or approach or photograph them in ways that cause them to alter their behaviour. Special care is needed when animals are breeding or moulting. Keep a minimum distance of 5 metres (15 feet) from all wildlife.

Do not damage plants, by walking or landing on extensive moss beds or lichen-covered scree slopes. They are fragile and take generations to grow.

When taking photographs please remember to stay low, as you will appear less threatening to animals and it will also yield better photographs. Do not try to make an animal react for a photograph. If an animalís behaviour changes you are too close. If you wish to take photographs of members of the local community please ask permission before doing so.

Do not collect or take away biological or geological specimens or artefacts as souvenirs, and do not litter or dispose of rubbish on land.

The staff on board the expedition are pioneers of environmental sustainability for polar cruising, and the ship is designed and run to adhere to marine protocols. In order to follow these environmental practises, the Akademik Ioffe burns cleaner fuels and treats their waste in the greenest way possible. Not only this, but the products used on board are responsibly-sourced to ensure protection of endangered species as well as conserving the region and habitat from which they came.

Please keep in mind that many of the places you are visiting on this voyage are unique. We are very proud of our outstanding reputation for conservation and respect for all the ecosystems we visit. Please assist us in maintaining this reputation. Our lecturers and staff will accompany you on shore excursions and provide you with guidance and specific information for the region. We kindly ask you to bring back any kind of rubbish to the ship where it will be correctly disposed of.

Community

We aim to work collaboratively with our partners and suppliers who we view as crucial stakeholders in the natural and cultural experiences we offer. By the nature of bringing visitors into an area in a responsible way, our safaris contribute significantly to local economies, communities and to the protection of wildlife and habitat, via payments to the ground operators, land and lodge owners. While we do not employ people on the ground directly, our carefully selected partners employ local naturalists, safari guides and specialists whose activities support and sustain their environment and educate and enlighten visitors.

Charitable Giving and Community Projects
We recommend as part of our responsible travel policy that you do not give money or gifts directly to local people. We have links with local projects/schools that would appreciate your support. Please ask your guide for further details.
