Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Kenya and Tanzania community volunteering project, 8 weeks

Environment

The health of our oceans, rivers and forests is crucial to our survival and wellbeing, yet unsustainable human activities are putting increasing pressure on our planet.

To date, our volunteers have protected over 130,000 acres of wildlife habitat and planted 700,000 trees.

Human wildlife conflict is an ongoing and significant issue in Tsavo region of Kenya, threatening the future for many important species such as elephants and lions. Youíll get involved in initiatives to promote a peaceful co-existence between the community and the local wildlife, like improving natural waterholes and planting indigenous trees to safeguard the future for these wonderful animals.

Community

All of the camp locations that you stay in during your programme are staffed by members of the surrounding communities. Our projects are ongoing and sustainable, allowing us to commit to permanent employment for locals.

Muhaka village in Kenya remains one of the poorest communities in the area and many of its residents cannot afford to repair or rebuild their houses, which have deteriorated over time. The school is also in a constant state of disrepair. You will help by building traditional housing for people and supporting the ongoing renovation of the school.

In Tsavo the local school and educational facilities are very dilapidated and erosion from seasonal flooding is threatening the buildings foundations making them liable to collapse. You will help by building or renovating school buildings and tackling erosion so that the children have a clean and safe academic environment in which to thrive.

In the rural area of Kidia, Tanzania, most people are living below the poverty line and something as basic as having a roof over your head is often a luxury that many canít afford. Youíll get the chance to work alongside the villagers, helping them to improve their daily lives whilst gaining an amazing insight into rural Tanzanian life.
