How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

Our small groups (maximum of 16 people) have a minimal impact on the Himalayas' fragile environment as we explore predominantly on foot.

All tour guides are responsible for ensuring that the guests understand the nature of the environment that they are in and minimise the impact that they may have. When we are camping we only use designated campsites, collect and dispose of all litter, boil all drinking water instead of using bottled water, and use responsible cooking fuels (kerosene) instead of wood.

Our porters in Nepal are equipped with suitable clothing and footwear for the type of trek they are about to work on, and this is recorded at the start of the trek. In addition the actual size and /or awkwardness (e.g. fluids, mattresses etc.) of the load to be carried, as well its weight is assessed prior to porters setting off on trek, ensuring that only comfortable loads are allocated.

Our Responsible Travel Code: Being Responsible is at the heart of everything our company does. The local supplier for this trip will promote our responsible travel code throughout your adventure. You will also receive specific information on this trip’s responsibility in your trip notes.

Charity Partnerships: As a company we support The Travel Foundation, a UK charity that has been established to promote responsible travel practises throughout the whole of the travel industry. We also work with a number of charity partners who work in the destinations that we visit; including Friends of Conservation and Born Free Foundation. We partner with many small grassroots projects throughout the destinations that we visit - they all share our responsible vision.

Carbon Balancing: All of our customers are invited to offset their international flight emissions. Contributions go to the Blue Ventures Carbon Offset program, a non-profit organisation which provides solar stoves for subsistence communities in Madagascar, benefiting the people and protecting the environment. We also contribute £2 per person towards offsetting of your in-country travel. We fully offset all emissions from our staff travel and run an energy efficient office.

Our Foundation: We’ve highlighted a few of the ways in which we offer our support, financially or otherwise, and now you can, too. We have set up our own foundation, which will administer funds donated by you. A small donation of £1 per person will be taken when booking a holiday, which we then match, and that money will be put to good use by one of our carefully selected projects. If you don’t want to make the donation, just tell us when you book.

Community

Our policy of staying in locally owned accommodation, having local guides and group leaders and using transport owned and operated by local people wherever possible is continued in Nepal.

Together with our local agent in Nepal we have helped to build a community / sports facility that can be used by schools and villagers in surrounding areas. This consists of a football pitch and centre, with the primary aim of creating a club around sports activities and teaching practical skills that will help communities operate as just that.

We hope the $5 pp contribution we make for every person travelling with us to Nepal will help to maintain this facility, assist with the development of the Trisuli Young Leaders Club & fund facilities for a local school in Nuwakot.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Very well organised led by very competent tour leader Bun Yong. So the entire logistic was a super backbone for a great holiday.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Prepare for cold nights and long transportation days.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Absolutely. More cold be done to save PET bottles usage with water if there was better facilitation of refill. That can be charged for at the hotel.. so not to save money - only plastic usage.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I am very satisfied.. if there could be cut down on bus travel time form place to place by taking other types of transport (eg boat from Phnom Penh to Siem Riep) that would be appreciated..

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Climbing up the Annapurna Mountains. It evoked all sorts of emotions; fear, apprehension, joy, excitement and relief. One of the most memorable experiences in my life and I will look back on it with fond memories.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I would suggest packing light and bring only the essentials. There were lots of clothes and equipment I didn't need to be honest. However bring lots of bug spray, the insects are huge!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, are Nepalese guide (Ashok) always told us about community projects and how local people will benefit from our contributions. He also told us about how to minimize our impact on the environment at each campsite and while trekking.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Everything was excellent, from the preparation given by the tour operator to the guides who assisted us on holiday. I would recommend anyone to go to Nepal and use the this tour operator as they really looked after the group and I think my fellow travellers would concur.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The white water rafting was absolutely fantastic - it was a great & fun way to get to know the rest of the group - as well as being very exciting. The highlight for me when was everyone kept falling in - hilarious!!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Definitely wear technical tops & trousers for the hiking as when the sun shone it was very hot. The technical (quick dry trousers) v useful also for the white water rafting as there was only an hour of sunlight to dry clothes during rafting and trek.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely. The local people were one of the highlights as they were just so lovely. We were told very clearly how to limit the impact of our travels on them and to ensure we didn't foster a 'hassle westerners for money' culture - I went onto India afterwards and the difference in the locals attitudes were so marked. I very much hope that visitors to Nepal continue to abide by the "rules" so that the begging & hawking doesn't become similar to India. The tour operator were very good about taking our litter with us and some people in the group picked up litter left by others before us - so we actually left it cleaner than when we arrived

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Superb - can't recommend it enough.
