Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Uganda 12 day tour

Environment

As a company we are committed to running our tours in a responsible manner as highlighted below:

Group size: we only travel with small groups. Our tours have a maximum of 16 in any one group, to help minimise the impact on the environments that we travel through.

Local craft and culture: we encourage our travellers to support local artisans and producers in the communities we visit. We advise them to look for items that come with minimal or eco-friendly packaging and not buy products made from endangered species (including ivory), hard woods, ancient artefacts, or marine products.

Environmental initiatives: we incorporate a $200 donation into the overall travel costs to support local environmental initiatives such as the Community Wildlife Scouts. They engage local youth, especially those who live near conservation areas, and ensure that there will be lifelong stewards, leaders, protectors and conservationist of Uganda’s environment.

Conservation: The permit fee charged to see the Gorillas on our tours goes directly towards the preservation of this endangered species and their fragile but beautiful environment. All park rangers are paid a fair wage and have the provisions and personnel to protect themselves and wildlife against harmful poaching activity.

Water: we advise our travellers to bring their own BPA free water bottles, as we provide a water drum at each hotel so bottles can be refilled before touring commences each day.

Community

To make sure we benefit the local economy and community as much as possible we:

- Establish good long-term relationships with locally owned suppliers and service providers.
- Pay fair prices for services and products.
- Recommend local, sustainable and ethical products and services to our travellers.
- Include locally owned restaurants and accommodation in our tours
- Employ local tour guides, drivers, porters and chefs

To respect and support local cultures we:
- Provide information to Tour Manager and travellers on appropriate and responsible behaviour and cultural etiquette
- Support local and cultural events in the area
- Work with our partners to help strengthen community initiatives.

Beyond this, we also support Community Wildlife Scouts helping the Park to address the human-wildlife conflicts that are caused by animal raids. By providing training for youth and supporting rangers with proper equipment and supplies that are helping the people of Uganda live harmoniously with the local wildlife.
