Cruising in the Antarctic

How this holiday makes a difference

This trip supports Birdlife International and the Scott Polar Research Institute.

The cruise boats are all members of the IAATO, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, and as such operate under strict Environmental standards with the least possible harm to this pristine continent and the greatest possible safety to you as the passengers.

Each passenger with us on our Polar Cruises receives a year’s ‘Friends membership’ of the Scott Polar Research Institute, Britain’s foremost Polar Research and Preservation organisation based in Cambridge.

Furthermore a contribution to Birdlife International’s ‘Save the Albatross Campaign’ is also made, with monies being used to protect the rapidly declining Albatross species – due in part to long line fishing in the Polar regions.

Story of the thingstodo provider

Passionate animal-lover Jules was galloping on a horse across the plains of Mongolia when he had the idea to set up a travel company which used tourism to raise funds and awareness of the plight of endangered animals. He worked with the Orangutan Foundation in Borneo to put together one of his first trips and today has a portfolio of incredible holidays that work with leading authorities on wildlife and contribute toward conservation. All staff share his ethos of ‘travel to protect’ and believe responsible tourism can be an effective tool if it helps local people realise the economic potential of their natural habitats.

Cruising in the Antarctic

Reviewed 09 Feb 2006 by Mary Tyler4 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Kayaking, surrounded by 2 types of whale, 2 types of seal and penguins, all popping in and out of the water at different intervals.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Book on the smallest boat possible (you get to get on and off more, it's more personal and you get to go to some more remote places), book all the adventure options (the people without them missed out of some of the best experiences)

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, they followed all the IAATO agreements very stringently to minimise environmental impact.

4. Any other comments?

In terms of service provided, enjoyment, scenery, food, staff on the ship 5/5 stars. In terms of accommodation quality 3/5 stars,- as expected it was basic, but clean and serviceable. The showers were slightly dated and could do with some investment as some tiles were cracked, and others missing. A very different holiday, but well worth the money, you definitely get what you pay for. Definitely an experience that we would recommend to friends and family of all ages.

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
