Tibet overland expedition

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

On this trip: Your Group Leader will be Nepalese and your guide Tibetan, enabling you to gain an insight into a unique culture. Using local staff also provides employment and vital income to people whose nations are among the poorest in the world. As entrance fees to the monasteries and temples go directly to the Chinese government, we will leave donations to the monks on your behalf, to help with the upkeep of these sacred places. Our small groups (maximum of 16 people) have a minimal impact on the fragile environment. All tour guides are responsible for ensuring that the guests understand the nature of the environment that they are in and minimise the impact that they may have.

Our Responsible Travel Code: Clients who travel with us will automatically receive a copy of our Responsible Travel leaflet. This contains details and advice on how you can make a positive difference when you travel. If you would like a copy in advance of travel please contact us.

Charity Partnerships: We work in partnership with Plan International. Plan works with some of the world’s poorest communities where three out of four children die before the age of five. We also support Friends of Conservation – an international charity committed to working with local people to develop a balance between their needs and the wildlife with which they share the natural habitat and ecosystems.

Carbon Balancing: Global warming is a real issue and is a direct result of your travel. We have teamed up with Climate Care to give you the opportunity to offset the carbon emissions from your flight. You’ll be asked upon booking if you want to donate – with set amounts from £5. As a company we offset the carbon emissions from all staff travel in full.

Our Foundation: We’ve highlighted a few of the ways in which we offer our support, financially or otherwise, & now you can, too. We have set up our own foundation, which will administer funds donated by you. A small donation of £1 per person will be taken when booking a holiday & that money will be put to good use by one of our carefully selected projects. If you don’t want to make the donation, just tell us when you book.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Visiting the fabulous Potala Palace and the incredible sight of Mount Everest from Base Camp. Oh, and the earthquake on the first night was fairly memorable as well!!

Our guide was excellent and really helped make the trip.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't over pack, although you will need a down jacket at Everest; don't expect great facilities at every hotel; have some incense sticks you can light in your room when the smell is particularly bad; write a journal in conjunction with taking photos so you remember every detail; take some pens and pencils to give to the kids rather than sweets or money; try the local food; dont try and take Tibet guide books into Tibet as the Chinese border guards confiscated books from two of our group

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I am sure the overland part of the trip benefited our local drivers and we massively over-tipped the bus driver in Lhasa so he definitely benefited as well. The local economy is bound to benefit from tourists but there is little evidence of minimising the impact on the environment as we drove everywhere

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Overall, my wife and I had a fabulous holiday. I had wanted to visit the Potala for many years and it more than exceeded my hopes and expectations. We went to some great places, saw some amazing sights and had some really memorable experiences.

There are a couple of other matters I would like to mention
1. Out itinerary moved one day due to flight changes and we had a 1/2 day tour of Kathmandu, which we had to pay for. Although only £10 each, the sights we saw are mentioned in the itinerary and this should have been included. And whilst relatively interesting, the Monkey Temple can be left off the itinerary, leaving more time at the more impressive and interesting sights.

2. Although nice guys, our Landcruiser drivers were very poor on the roads. The have little sense of road position and persisted in trying to overtake on blind corners. We narrowly avoided a number of collisions and I genuinely fear that unless action is taken a serious accident will result.

3. The days in Shigatse and Gyantse could be combined, leaving a full day for relaxing at the end of the trip. We should have stayed 12km from the border but ended up staying in a beautiful hotel at Dhulikhel, where it would be great to spend two nights. A lovely location in the hills from where a 1/2 day trip to Bhaktapur could easily be managed.
