How Annapurna Sanctuary trekking holiday makes a difference

Environment

On this trip: We work hand in hand with a local Nepalese owned agency, who employs on our behalf, group leaders, sirdars, porters etc - and whom without our employment would be living a subsistence living as hill farmers. Our local Nepalese owned agency employs responsible working practices throughout their operations. This includes a porter welfare policy to limit the load each porter to carries to 25kg, to pay a fair wage so porters can equip themselves properly and to use the same pool of porters offering them further training opportunities to become guides and more if they wish.

Our Responsible Travel Code: Being Responsible is at the heart of everything our company does - full details of our code can be found on our website. The local supplier for this trip will promote our responsible travel code throughout your adventure. You will also receive specific information on this trip’s responsibility in your trip notes.

Charity Partnerships: As a company we support The Travel Foundation, a UK charity that has been established to promote responsible travel practises throughout the whole of the travel industry. We also work with a number of charity partners who work in the destinations that we visit; including Friends of Conservation and Born Free Foundation. We partner with many small grassroots projects throughout the destinations that we visit - they all share our responsible vision.

Carbon Balancing: All of our customers are invited to offset their international flight emissions. Contributions go to the Blue Ventures Carbon Offset program, a non-profit organisation which provides solar stoves for subsistence communities in Madagascar, benefiting the people and protecting the environment. We also contribute £2 per person towards offsetting of your in-country travel. We fully offset all emissions from our staff travel and run an energy efficient office.

Our Foundation: We’ve highlighted a few of the ways in which we offer our support, financially or otherwise, and now you can, too. We have set up our own foundation, which will administer funds donated by you. A small donation of £1 per person will be taken when booking a holiday, we then double this amount and that money will be put to good use by one of our carefully selected projects. If you don’t want to make the donation, just tell us when you book.

Community

Money from our stay reaches a wide number of people - many of the teahouse owners now gain thier sole income from trekkers.

Together with our local agent in Nepal we have helped to build a community / sports facility that can be used by schools and villagers in surrounding areas. This consista of a football pitch and centre, with the primary aim of creating a club around sports activities and teaching practical skills that will help communities operate as just that.

We hope the $5 pp contribution we make for every person travelling with us to Nepal will help to maintain this facility, assist with the development of the Trisuli Young Leaders Club & fund facilities for a local school in Nuwakot.

How we choose providers

Annapurna Sanctuary trekking holiday

Reviewed 29 Apr 2012 by Sylvie Edwards4 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

- being in the Himalayas, learning about the Sherpas, looking around and seeing such amazing landscape
- seeing Everest and climbing Kala Patar
- trekking with fun and caring people (in our group)
- sense of achievement reaching EBC.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

- teahouses are FREEZING at night (especially the higher you go) so you need WARM clothes and a down sleeping bag.
- the paths can be very busy! we were not the only ones trekking!!!
- facilities (wahsing/loos) can be ... very rudimentary (especially in the highest lodges)
- food in the teahouses is good but I ate local dishes and I wasn't ill
- I would not consider taking any medication preventively. I didn't take anything and was completely fine. The trek is designed with some acclimitisation days.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

- I hope that we gave "work" to the porters and guide/assistant guides so that they can support their families.
- During the trek, our group drunk only bottled water and I feel we should have not done this as I know now that all the plastic bottles go in a hole in the ground in the Himalayas. I spoke to other people trekking and they drank tap water and used iodine tablets, and they were fine. I feel that our guide didn't put that across to us at all.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

- Amazing experience

My only slight question is when it came to tipping our porters, assistant guides and guide, I and we all felt that they expect their tip and are not especially surprised and thankful about it. The guidelines about tipping from the tour operator are too high for the head guide as we were meant to give him £2-3 a day per person (we were 16 in our group!) this is not a tip anymore but a salary!!! I wonder how much do they get before our tip? I am very happy to give a tip but this is too much. Our group gave each an equivalent of about £45 and we divided the money between all of them.
