Responsible tourism: Shamanic healing and Dance retreat in Bali

Environment

Our retreat in Bali is at a retreat center - made up of 2 sections, the traditional Balinese family compound with home-stay accommodation reflecting the true art and beauty of the Balinese culture and the retreat centre located in a tranquil oasis set behind the home-stay reflecting the true nature and spirit that lies in the heart of Bali. This kind of environment asks the customers to care deeply about the waste of water and energy. Customers may be asked to turn off the lights, air conditioning and fans when leaving a room. We also recommend to reconsider using air conditioning if possible. Regarding taking care of water usage, we ask clients to reconsider whether they need new towels every day and let the retreat staff know if they would prefer to reuse their towels – this would reduce water used.

Local Balinese people traditionally used only organic materials leaving no waste behind. With the introduction of plastics, non-degradable waste is now covering Bali from head to toe. Therefore, when visiting waterfall, we encourage our guests to pick up all the garbage on the way. By doing that we set up an example to local community as well as to our clients on a proper waste management. We do that in a context of site-specific exploring practice - as a silent meditative walk. Also, we remind our guests to recycle cans, paper and plastics and encourage travelers to tell the accommodation providers that recycling facilities would be welcome, if they’re not currently offered – demand often precedes supply of such services.

Community

Local crafts and culture
The retreat center is fully licensed and comply with Indonesian legality for hosting all residential retreat groups. We employ local cooks and kitchen staff, accommodation staff, drivers and receptionists. For this retreat we also employ local artists to run traditional dance workshops, like Legong and Barongan. In this way we support local economy and promote Balinese art and culture.

Friends & Neighbours
This retreat was created as a collaboration between artists, healers, tour guides, accommodation providers and spiritual seekers. People that have history and experience in supporting many different community-led projects and events around the world, with the goal of ensuring that the money made from our traveling to a region goes directly to those most in need, in order to make a lasting difference in the local communities that we visit.Part of money gathered from our retreat also goes to support local artistic communities (hand - crafters, musicians, dancers...) in Bali and to support a shamanic healing center in Brazil.
