Responsible tourism: Costa Rica luxury family holiday

Environment

- Costa Rica is one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world with a high use of renewable resources, including hydroelectric and wind power. As well as being one of the most environmentally aware countries in the world, it is the greenest country in Latin America. By supporting this country in encouraging our clients to visit, we are supporting the practice of green and sustainable energy.

- Guests visit the Cloud Forests, Arenal region and Manuel Antonio where a local guide will educate them about the local flora, fauna and wildlife and how they can help support its preservation. They can go on nature walks where guides ensure they understand the local issues and that the wildlife and natural surroundings are left untouched and undisturbed.

- We use lodges that employ ethical and responsible practices, with a small footprint and an emphasis on educating guests about the surrounding environment. This improves awareness and individual responsibility. Our lodges and hotels are also environmentally sound, relying on renewable energy where possible and local produce and resources. El Silencio hotel in the Cloud Forest region is a eco-lodge overlooking the 500-acres of private reserve on the edge of Juan Castro Blanco National Park. The lodge is built with nature in mind to blend with its bio-diverse and delicate fauna setting. There are organic gardens, a greenhouse and a small farm that help sustain the hotel and its ethical concepts. Guests can partake in eco-adventures or even plant trees. El Parador in Manuel Antonio has its own nature reserve and expert staff can take guests on nature trail hikes, mangrove tours and kayaking trips.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a wildlife project in Costa Rica. Our environmental charity in Costa Rica is Kids Saving the Rainforest (kidssavingtherainforest.org), which rescues and rehabilitates injured and orphaned animals.

Community

- Our guides are locals, which helps us support and sustain the local economy through tourism in a long-term way. It also gives our clients a more authentic experience of a destination and a chance to meet local people, aiding their knowledge of the place and culture. This understanding is key for people to get the most out of a trip and to firm up relationships between locals and tourists.

-Throughout their stay in Costa Rica, guests are taken to local restaurants and cafes to try out the local cuisine and experience the culture associated to their food. They are also provided with a detailed list of local restaurants and cafes that are run by locals, as well as shops that sell local handcrafts and not-for-profit organisations they can help.

-We organise a huge array of activities for guests from nature walks the in the national parks, Cloud Forests and Arenal region from horse riding and hikes to canopy tours and yoga. These are all run by local guides, therefore supporting the local community.

- The hotels and lodges we use are staffed by locals, which follows on from our own policy of only using local guides. This serves to empower the community and create long-term, stable and well-paid jobs. El Parador in Manuel Antonio offers a wide array of activities with local guides and experts for their guests to partake in - from surfing, hikes, yoga, diving, horse riding, mangrove tours and kayaking. Tabacon in the Arenal region organises numerous activities for their guests with locals, from yoga classes, hikes, white water rafting and canopy tours.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a school charity based in Ecuador. Our school charity in Ecuador is the Condor Trust (condortrust.org), which helps encourage low-income families to send their children to school. The funds provide uniforms, school materials and books for the children.
