Responsible tourism: Mexico luxury cultural tour, temples & traditions

Environment

Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas and is home to one of the most diverse weather systems in the world. Because of this it has a has a highly varied environment from tropical beaches to rain forest, mountains and deserts. We support these unique regions by taking travellers into its parks, reserves and other protected zones which ensure the flora, fauna and environment are safeguarded.

- When guests visit the ruins of Palenque they go with expert local guides who share the history and stories to the site and educate and inform them on how they can help support the preservation of these ruins for future generations. They are also advised on how to ensure their visit has as little impact as possible on the sites, such as not touching any monuments and being careful throughout the ruins.

- We use lodges that employ ethical and responsible practices, with a small footprint and an emphasis on educating guests about the surrounding environment. This improves awareness and individual responsibility. Our lodges and hotels are also environmentally sound, relying on renewable energy where possible and local produce and resources. Parador San Juan de Dios hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas has its own organic gardens, with the produce used in the hotel's restaurant. Cha Kah is an eco resort in Palenque with 50 acres of reserve with gardens, rivers and jungle preserved by the resort.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a wildlife project in Costa Rica. Our environmental charity in Costa Rica is Kids Saving the Rainforest (kidssavingtherainforest.org), which rescues and rehabilitates injured and orphaned animals.

Community

- Our guides are locals, which helps us support and sustain the local economy through tourism in a long-term way. It also gives our clients a more authentic experience of a destination and a chance to meet local people, aiding their knowledge of the place and culture. This understanding is key for people to get the most out of a trip and to firm up relationships between locals and tourists.

-When guests visit Mexico City, San Cristobal de las Casa and Campeche we arrange for them to visit local, often family-run restaurants to experience the local cuisine, immerse in the culture and support the local economy. We also encourage visits to stores that support local artisans.

-In San Cristobal de las Casas guests will go with a local guide to explore the culture of this colonial town, including partaking in a weaving workshop with local artisans.

-Guests will visit the indigenous towns of San Juan Chamula and San Lorenzo Zinacantan where they will learn about the traditions, customs and history of the people here with an expert local guide.

- The hotels and lodges we use are staffed by locals, which follows on from our own policy of only using local guides. This serves to empower the community and create long-term, stable and well-paid jobs. Parador San Juan de Dios hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas has an art gallery exhibiting local artists work and a museum which shares the history of the area. They also organise cultural activities to help guests learn more about the region and the traditions of the locals. Quinta Cha Nab Nal hotel in Palenque is only three kilometres from the ruins of Palenque and the owner and staff share the history and stories of the ruins with guests and ensure they are careful to preserve the ruins when they visit them by not touching any fragile monuments. Hacienda Uayamon hotel in Campeche was an important hacienda in the colonial period and it has been carefully resorted to preserve its original architecture. Guests learn about the history of the property and region, and the hotel organises tours to the archaeological sites in the area and educate guests and the ongoing preservation of these sites and how they can help.

- For each of our Latin America trips sold, we donate money to a school charity based in Ecuador. Our school charity in Ecuador is the Condor Trust (condortrust.org), which helps encourage low-income families to send their children to school. The funds provide uniforms, school materials and books for the children.
