Responsible tourism: Tailor made holiday in remote north of Vietnam
This is a low-impact cultural tour designed to accommodate small groups and private travellers, not a seat-in-bus tour. Your itinerary will see you visit protected areas and regions of great natural beauty, including the Mai Chau Valley, the Sapa Highlands, and Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as historic sites of interest in Hanoi and Son La. Such regions of historical interest and natural beauty are in large part dependent on the revenues generated by tourism for their preservation, meaning your visit will play a small but real role in helping to sustain these areas.
Concerns about the increase in the number, and size, of the cruise ships operating in Halong Bay have prompted us to ensure that we only use small junks with a good reputation and a firm commitment to keeping Halong Bay clean. Our preferred cruise operator, Indochina Sails, accommodates only a limited number of guests on its cruise ships, the largest of which has 23 cabins.
We employ local tour guides who will help you to travel responsibly through the fragile environments visited during your itinerary.
Carbon offsetting – We provide a monthly donation to the Carbon Neutral fund to partially offset the emissions generated by our business.
Your itinerary will see you visit Vietnam's remote north. In the highland regions of northern Vietnam, ethnic minorities still account for a large proportion of the population. Your tour will provide you with opportunities to engage with these communities, visiting isolated White Thai, H'mong, Zay and Dao settlements during the course of your itinerary.
As always, it is important to approach indigenous communities in such a way that respects their culture, even as you engage with and show interest in it. This means extending common courtesies such as dressing appropriately when visiting religious sites, not taking photos without first asking for permission, and ensuring that you do not leave behind litter or mar the environment they depend on.
We employ local tour guides who are mindful of local customs and traditions and will guide you on the proper decorum in each situation.
The money generated by your tour – through entrance fees, nights spent at locally-owned or staffed accommodation, tour guide fees and your patronage of local shops and businesses – will also help to support the communities you visit.
