Responsible tourism: Guatemala tailor made holiday, culture and volcanoes
Our itinerary explores Guatemala's colourful markets, landscapes, indigenous villages of the Mayan Lake Atitlan, and Semuc Champey on foot, bike, and kayak to ensure less noise pollution and air pollution by not using a combustion engine in a vehicle, plus, to limit habitat damage through the use of a vehicle. Our guides are trained to ensure that clients follow rules to limit the damage of UNESCO historical and natural sites.
Our partner has led a community project to replace wood fired furnaces used inside houses to more efficient, solar furnaces to reduce greenhouse emissions and the destruction of local forests for fuel wood - to date 500 rural families have received new furnaces to cook food and heat water using solar energy. We ensure that tourist's are informed of the importance of Lake Atitlan to indigenous communities and emphasised that littering on its shores must be avoided and any waste must be taken away.
We visit less discovered markets including Comalapa Market, to provide a more authentic experience for the visitor, plus, provide income to producers not able to access the mainstream tourist chain in addition to provide opportunities for more isolated market produce suppliers/producers by bringing tourism to new areas. In San Juan la Laguna, we visit a cooperative formed by Tz’utujil women with an ancestral history of weaving and dying in the line of the Mayan culture and tradition. Bringing tourists to the cooperative workshop where they can learn of their practices and purchase their products, ensuring that the skills are preserved by providing economic opportunities through tourism.
On the shores of Lake Atitlan, we visit indigenous communities to ensure that they benefit from entrepreneurial opportunities linked to tourism. All our guides are locally employed to ensure that local communities benefit through tourism employment rather than the use of an international guide to lead the client experience. Our suppliers sign a ethical agreement to ensure that employees are fairly paid.
