Responsible tourism: White Lion conservation volunteering in South Africa

Environment

This projects main aim is to reintroduce prides of white lions to their natural home in the Timbavati region of South Africa. Due to their incredibly rarity and beauty, white lions are often selectively bred for zoos, wildlife reserves and even for canned hunting, but this project provides a safe haven for the lions in which they can live out their lives without fear of poaching.

By reintroducing the white lions to their endemic home, this should help to restore the natural balance of the local environment and ensure that all of the creatures that reside within this area are safe.

One good example of a success at the project is the first white lion the team rescued from a canned hunting operation. With people worrying that this once captive lion would not be able to hunt due to his upbringing, he immediately proved them wrong when within 5 minutes of his release into his new enclosure, he took down a wildebeest in front of stunned project staff!

The project also places a huge importance on the upkeep of the area, and it does this through litter picks and having volunteers take care of any waste they produce in the appropriate way.

Community

The local community plays a very important role on the white lion conservation project. The locals believe that the white lions were a gift from the almighty, and as a result they feel incredibly strongly about the conservation of this beautiful big cat. It is for this reason that the project is so happy to send volunteers to work within the local community and more specifically the schools.

Volunteers will help to create plant nurseries and help the children with their extra-curricular school activities whilst in Africa, and they will try to further convey the message animal conservation can help these children in the long run.

The project also encourages all of its volunteers to travel with respect, and to pay attention to the local traditions and expectations when out in the country. The white lions have a mystical element around them whenever you ask a local person, and volunteers on the project are helping to protect an animal which is so dear to the hearts of the locals.
