Amazon rainforest vacation in Brazil

Don't leave it too late!
Please note that not many airlines fly to Brazil and flights can be expensive (and difficult to find) if you leave it too late to book. We recommend that flights are booked at least 3 months prior to departure. For holidays and Carnaval you'll need to plan even further in advance. The longer you leave it, the more expensive it'll be.
Tailor made holiday
This trip can be tailormade to create a unique holiday for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. It is a more luxurious trip that will suit those who enjoy immersing themselves in new cultures and environments before relaxing in comfort in some of the best and most characterful local accommodation! Quality and value are the hallmark of these trips.

How this holiday makes a difference

The Urihi trip takes place in the Juma Lake about 100km from Manaus city.

The local community once suffering from extreme poverty and lack of economic alternative was asked by the land/lodge owners to cooperate in the conservation and maintenance of the area.In return local residents would remain living in the land and produce some of the items consumed at the lodge. Local residents are trained and given a chance to work closely with the lodge as guides or to assist guides and travellers during trekking in the forest.

This lodge has welcomed many of the ideas we requested to be implemented and/or developed, i.e.: A plan for a bird observatory and an animal rescue location is on its way. Together are insuring a sustainable source of income for the locals and developing a sense of care for their "home" while preserving the environment.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

For many years I have dreamed of paddling a canoe on the Amazon river, and on September 25th 2010 at the age of 65, I done just that, although, I was use to paddling a Canadian type canoe the dugout kind the natives use were a little harder to control.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Learn the basics of the language, have a go at every thing, and take a good camera with you.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I visited a large local family, 47 members, grandpa was over 60, and His granddaughter was about 3 years old, grandpa made remedies, lotions, soaps, and scents, out of tree barks soaked in oils. I also visited a community of around 20 families, after we had finished a very informative tour of the village, several stalls had been set out with hand made crafts, all made out of things found in the forest. I must point out that there was no pressure to buy, but you can not ignore the looks on their faces.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I wished I could have done it 20 years ago, and would like to go back in the wet season to see the Amazon at it's full height. Marks out of 10/11.
