Responsible tourism: Laos tailor made holiday, highlights tour
Take a voyage of discovery into Laos... embracing the rich diversity of one of Asia's most peaceful and enigmatic countries.
Still relatively "undiscovered" by the masses, travelling around Laos can be quite an adventure in itself but from the waterfalls and islands of the Mekong, through charming colonial buildings and ancient monuments, to the hills, caves and spectacular scenery of the North, the intrepid traveller will be more than amply rewarded for their efforts.
Specialising in tailor-made tours means we can also take advantage of local methods of transport and experience traditional local accommodation whether in small hotels, home-stays or palaces, tribal villages or occasionally even sleeping under the stars. When luxury resorts are required, we give priority to those who share our concern for the local and wider environment, treat their staff fairly and support local community projects.
The road network in Laos does admittedly leave a little to be desired but rather than use polluting domestic flights, we take advantage of the necessarily slow pace, driving to our destinations and giving you the opportunity explore the small villages and fascinating countryside you’ll see along the route.
Other transport will include a riverboat trip up the Mekong to visit the famous and sacred Pak Ou Buddha Cave, cycling around Vang Vieng and even one of Laos’ very few trains, a small gauge railway which circumnavigates the falls in the 4000 Island area.
We’ll also give you the chance to experience some of Laos’ unique and carefully preserved natural assets including swimming in Kuang Si waterfall where the water cascades down several hundred feet into a series of turquoise pools and if you’re lucky, perhaps even catching a glimpse of the Irrawaddy (freshwater) dolphins in the 4000 Island area.
Your pre-departure documentation will include information about our responsible travel policies and will encourage you to follow our guidelines. These include stressing the need to avoid wastage of local resources, minimising the pollution caused by leaving litter and emphasising the need to respect local customs and cultural beliefs.
Through our guides' in-depth knowledge of the country and its people, we are pleased to be able to offer journeys that truly capture the essence of this beautiful country, its people and way of life whilst the small size of our groups allows us to minimize our impact on both the culture and the environment.
You’ll have the opportunity to visit small villages such as that of Ban Xang Khong where weaving of traditional Lao textiles still takes place on ancient wooden looms and in Luang Prabang, you may be witness to the traditional Lao rite of almsgiving as 300 monks file silently through the streets each morning. (If you would like to participate, our guides will advise you on how to offer alms respectfully and in keeping with the strict Buddhist traditions.)
Throughout the trip, by using local guides, local transport and local accommodation and paying fair wages, we ensure that not only do you gain a unique insight into the culture you are visiting but also that as much of your money as possible stays in the local community are visiting. By buying locally-made handicrafts in the markets and from the crafts people you’ll visit along the way, your contribution will go even further… and you’ll also have some truly unique souvenirs to take home along with your memories.
