East China adventure tour

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

See China through the eyes of a local, as your Chinese tour leader gives you a first-hand insight into the exotic and colourful tapestry that makes up this diverse country. Wandering around famous historic sites and visiting archaeological treasure-troves, pagodas and former palaces gives travellers an awareness of these cultural relics and the importance of them being preserved and protected, so that they can be enjoyed and appreciated by future generations.

Enjoying a home-cooked lunch as a guest of a Chinese family in a village house near Yangshuo enables travellers to interact closely with local people and hopefully leading to better cross-cultural understanding. Through a question and answer session, you learn how the local people live and gain an appreciation of their daily routines. Equally important your Chinese tour leader will help you to understand the traditions of these proud people, ensuring you don’t commit any cultural ‘faux pas’. This tour also includes a cruise down the Yangtze, where you learn about the ecological issues surrounding the world's third longest river.

To support tour programs in China this operator is training tour leaders on a variety of issues, from environmental awareness to First Aid. This not only assists in the conduct of a tour but also provides leaders with important life skills. By only employing tour leaders born and bred in the regions they visit, they are supporting local economies. Through offering employment and steady revenue, tourism can ultimately make a real positive difference to local communities.

East China adventure tour

Reviewed 10 Oct 2005 by Catharine Potter4 star rating

Basically it was a really fantastic trip and I feel that I came back with information overload having seen and experienced so much. China never failed to surprise and amaze me all the way through the tour. The tour was quite full and exhausting at times so it was good also to be able to opt out of the odd afternoon or morning when we wanted to as well. Our guide in mainland China, Linda Han was really sweet and we could not have done the trip without her. I feel that if it is at all possible, it would be good for the Chinese guides to travel outside China so that they can see some of the countries that their tourists come from and that would give them a better understanding of the people they are dealing with in their job.

Our guide unfortunately could not follow us out of China when we went down into Hong Kong. We were met at the port by someone who seemed to have no interest in meeting us at all. He took us to our hotel OK but then left us there leaving us no information about what was going to happen next, how to orientate ourselves and so on. He just dumped us there. As it happens Hong Kong is quite easy to get around and several of us had guide books but we had no idea whether he was going to meet us at breakfast time the next morning or not. He just gave us no information and in effect the tour finished the day before it said in the brochure.

Read the operator's response here:

We are glad that Cath enjoyed her tour to China and thank her for her feedback. We are sorry that her Chinese tour leader was unable to accompany the group all the way to Hong Kong, which is the way that we would hope all our tours would end. The situation still exists where by citizens of China are greatly restricted by their government in the number of times each year that they can enter Hong Kong, which is considered a Special Administrative Region.

Just so you know, we try to explain about this situation in our Trip Notes (Detailed Itineraries). To get around the situation of our tour leaders not being able to escort their groups into Hong Kong, we have appointed a local operator to provide transfer guides to escort our group on arrival in Hong Kong, after which is free time for everyone. It appears that on this occasion that that our Hong Kong transfer guide has failed to provide the required level of service. We are most aware that is an issue and our Operations Supervisor in China is currently communicating with our transport provider in Hong Kong to ensure that our future trips end on a better note. Our thanks again to Cath for her most valuable feedback.
