Sailing holidays in Scotland

How this holiday makes a difference

Despite its beauty, the Highlands and Islands is one of the least affluent regions of Scotland. By bringing the benefits of tourism to this area, using local services and sourcing local produce, we help to support local businesses, create employment and contribute to the overall sustainable development of the region. By its very nature, sailing is a very sustainable mode of travel. The start and finish points of this trip are easily accessible by rail (via the stunning West Highland Railway line) and clients are encouraged to travel by rail, meaning that no cars need be used on this environmentally friendly maritime adventure.

All of our trips start and finish at or close to railway stations, as this makes it much easier for our clients to travel to the Highlands by rail. We encourage travel by train or bus in all of our joining instructions that we send to clients, and also have a section on our website which includes links to train timetables and booking services to make it easier for clients to choose to travel by rail.

Sailing holidays in Scotland

Reviewed 13 Aug 2007 by Liz Laine4 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing dolphins play in the bow wave of the ship, followed minutes later by a Minke whale passing within metres of us

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Read and use the kit list - particularly the earplugs and the wellies

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

It was certainly low carbon as we travelled up there by train, and the food was generally sourced from known, Scottish sources - but I'm not sure how much we benefited the islands' economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, despite the heavy Skye 'mist'

Read the operator's response here:

We're glad that you enjoyed the holiday Liz!

With regards to benefiting the island economies, some of the food is sourced from the islands and many of our groups visit the local tearooms and/or craft shop after a day's walking on the island.

The yacht and crew are from the Knoydart peninsula, which is even more remote than the Small Isles. Small scale tourism is the lifeblood of this isolated peninsula so by chartering the yacht and crew for a week, this provides vital income for the local residents and enables them to live there. We are also one of the very few companies to take groups to Knoydart in winter (for winter walking), thus providing support to the Knoydart community year round.

I hope this helps and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Holiday Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
