How this holiday makes a difference

UK office:
It all starts at home so we have first worked to reduce our carbon footprint in our UK offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies in place, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.

Leaders & local supplier:
Our local supplier aims to generate employment and revenue in the Kiruna region by working closely with local communities. All food and resources are obtained locally and the accommodations used on this trip are built from materials of the area. The local supplier is also proud to promote the local traditions with excursions included into the trip to visit the native Sami people, with a night spent in a traditional Lappish tent. The activity of dogsledding itself greatly reduces the carbon footprint of the area and the very limited use of cars for transfers helps to sustain the surrounding environment. The dogs themselves are cared for in accordance with Swedish laws, with their housing even containing fiber-glass insulation in the roofs. The heating system used in the main building comes from a carefully installed “ground-heating” system and relies totally from nature. In the wilderness cabins no electricity is used, relying on wood-burning stoves to provide heat.

Group size:
We operate small group tours that have a low impact on the communities we visit and we always ensure our operations do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. This allows us to stay in unique and characterful accommodation that would not have benefitted from tourism due to their limited size.

Activity:
Our selection of alternative winter activities seeks to make the most of the natural environment in its pristine state, rather than changing it. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and dogsledding are best suited to remote wilderness areas and the development of these alternatives is key to the long-term survival of many wilderness communities.

Story of the holiday provider

The guides on these trips spend most of their lives on these old Russian survey vessels, cruising pristine Polar wildernesses. Travelling with such highly-qualified experts is a real education; one of the expedition leaders is regarded as the ‘god of polar bears’ and another is an acclaimed wildlife photographer. This company has a long heritage in taking hundreds of clients to the Arctic and Antarctic and the staff believe you’re a long time dead so don’t be surprised if you get woken at 4am and asked to go up to the deck to watch arctic foxes playing.
