Yosemite & Grand Canyon holiday

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

Using low-impact 12-seater diesel minivans - which have a far lower environmental impact than the usual American fly-drive holiday - we explore some of the most spectacular National Parks and natural landscapes in the United States on this tour. Working closely with National Park Service guidelines, to ensure our operation we operate in a responsible manner, our visits help promote the protection of these stunning locations.

Many of the nights on this tour are spent camping, and on leaving we are always careful that we leave the area in a good state - all litter is carefully disposed of, and extra care is taken when we stay within the National Parks themselves. We are keen to ensure that our conduct is in keeping with the local communities and spend a night with the Navajo Indians in Monument Valley, learning about their heritage, enjoying a traditional meal and ensuring that support is put into these local communities.

As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, SOS Children’s Villages and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism such as the Travel Foundation and AITO.

Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. We offset the emissions of all our staff flights through Climate Care and encourage our customers to do likewise (www.climatecare.co.uk).

Story of the holiday provider

This small group operator is just celebrating its 30th year and was originally set up to enrich people’s lives through adventure travel. The directors have roots in overland trucking and are determined to keep a pioneering spirit alive. They believe what sets them apart is the strong relationships they’ve developed with local suppliers and tour guides over the years. A tour leader who thinks creatively can turn a good experience into a fantastic one and open up a place so that travellers gain insight into a completely different way of life. They operate in many different countries and try to avoid a blanket approach – their aim is to get customers involved in the projects they visit and to forge lifelong friendships.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Difficult to pick out one thing - so much of the holiday was memorable: Climbing to Angel's Landing in the Zion National Park, walking in Death Valley, Trekking in the Grand Canyon, barbeque with Navajo native Americans in Monument Valley, seeing The Beatles Love show in Vegas, Climbing the Yoesmite falls, Venice beach in LA, China Town in San Francisco.....

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Travel as light as you can. Bring the right gear for walking in a hot climate. Use a dollar cash card (like the Caxton fx card) which is well accepted, safe and convenient. You will need the 3 litre water carriers the joining instructions suggest.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Only to a point. It benefited local people in generating economic activity (but mostly business owners). The vehicle was not the environmentally friendly one suggested - it was a gas guzzling petrol engine model.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Varied, stimulating, intensive, exciting and great fun!

This was a superb tour. The customer questionnaire asked us to name the highlights of the tour and the only possible answer was everyday. The sheer variety of locations and the walking options meant that each day provided something special.

We saw majestic granite peaks, salt lakes, warm sandstone rocks ,arches and pinnacles and The Grand Canyon. Sunrise and sunsets, sea lions, coyote, deer, vultures, blue jays and Californian condors soaring. The glitz of Vegas and the gambling at Laughlin. We ate diner style, barbecue, Mexican, Chinese and Navajo.

The group size ,12 and the type of van/bus were also ideal and the knowledge and enthusiasm of the hardworking driver leader all contributed to the whole hugely enjoyable experience. It was both our first trip to America and this type of holiday. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone of a fairly independent nature but who wants to do an "organised" trip with lots of inbuilt freedom, certain creature comforts and enough time to explore.
