How Mexican adventure holiday makes a difference

On this trip: Our policy of staying in locally owned accommodation, having local guides and group leaders, using transport owned and operated by local people wherever possible is continued in Mexico. Our small groups (maximum of 20 people) have a minimal impact on the fragile environment. All tour guides are responsible for ensuring that the guests understand the nature of the environment that they are in and minimise the impact that they may have.

Our stay employs the services of local people who depend on our visits for valuable income. Our local agent helps to support the Friends of the Sian Ka'an organisation through their eco-tourism projects. The organisation aims to protect the Sian Ka'an biosphere and provide technical assistance, training and education for indigenous communities living in the area. So far they have established seven protected areas covering over 780,000 acres.

Responsible code: Being Responsible is at the heart of everything our company does - full details of our code can be found on our website. The local supplier for this trip will promote our responsible travel code throughout your adventure. You will also receive specific information on this trip’s responsibility in your trip notes.

Helping to minimise negative impact: All of our customers are invited to offset their international flight emissions. Contributions go to the Blue Ventures Carbon Offset program, a non-profit organisation which provides solar stoves for subsistence communities in Madagascar, benefiting the people and protecting the environment. We also contribute £2 per person towards offsetting of your in-country travel. We fully offset all emissions from our staff travel and run an energy efficient office.

Giving something back: We have a foundation that collects the funds that you donate to us to support our projects. All our customers are invited to make a £1 per person contribution to the foundation at the time of booking. We will match every contribution that you make with our own £1. You as a customer choose where these funds are used from a shortlist of nominated projects – so it really is YOUR foundation.

Partnerships: As a company we support The Travel Foundation, a UK charity that has been established to promote responsible travel practises throughout the whole of the travel industry. We also work with a number of charity partners who work in the destinations that we visit; including Friends of Conservation and Born Free Foundation. We partner with many small grassroots projects throughout the destinations that we visit - they all share our responsible vision.

It was the first trip on a boat, going along through the stunning views of the jungle to see Bonampak. Once there the whole impact of the place the buildings and the colour of the murals, then to top it of was a troop of 30 monkeys moving across the site.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The Mayan ruins at Palenque and Tikal and climbing Pacaya volcano were the three biggest highlights.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for some very long travel days and some of the optional excursions, especially the volcano climb are definitely worth it, so budget to include them. Also, there's more wildlife spotting than the itinerary lets on.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I think it's likely that it benefited local people, as we had a lot of local guides at the different sites and for different activities and they were all local bus/boat drivers and local shopping opportunities. And Guatemala and Honduras need more tourists and better international press anyway. Also, travelling by bus (even though mostly private) and boat in a group means less impact on the environment than lots of internal flights. However, I think we should have been given more information as we went along, during the holiday, as to what choices were made by the tour operator and how those choices benefited local people and/or minimised the impact on the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I'll quote the T-shirt my husband bought - It was 'Un Gran Adventura'.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Most memorable was trekking up an active volcano, seeing red hot boulders spewing out and hearing the bangs from the smoking crater. Then having the soles of my boots fall off from the heat and trek down in my socks!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take the opportunity to relax on a beach excursion at Livingstone to restoke your energy levels for the second week. The freshly cooked BBQ on the beach can't be beaten!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Local businesses and transport used throughout benefits the community, particularly where for many indian communities, tourism is now the only way they can make a living to keep their customs alive.
