How this holiday makes a difference

Our Cuba tours offer a fascinating insight into the colourful, friendly Cuban way of life and aim to support local communities every step of the way. We encourage passengers to learn some basic Spanish before they arrive so they can interact with the Cuban people on a basic level and also as a sign of respect as visitors.

Most of the accommodation on this tour is in the form of a traditional homestay with a local family. By staying with local families, and not in hotels, we are using minimal resources and directly supporting the communities. These homestays also give passengers the chance to interact with the locals directly, which is definitely a highlight in itself. They also educate tourists about the day to day life of people in Cuba. When we aren’t staying with local families, we choose to stay in locally-owned and operated hotels, rather than large chains or conglomerates, in order to give back to the economy and support local businesses. We choose to drive and take public transport on this tour, rather than using internal flights, so that our carbon emissions and overall environmental impact is lower.

We use local operators and specialist guides on our tours throughout Cuba. Our commitment to these local operators means we are constantly putting back into the community and ensuring these businesses continue to prosper. This also empowers local business operators leading to increased confidence and development of their products and services. Local guides can also educate our passengers about customs and cultures. Our tour leaders will encourage passengers to donate items to the families they stay with as a sign of appreciation and respect. Passengers can also leave items with their Tour Leader or local guides at the end of their trips.

In the Caribbean, we support the Caribbean Conservation Corporation & Sea Turtle Survival League. Since 2004 we have adopted a total of 7 Green Sea Turtles in conjunction with the Sea Turtle Survival League. Our support has provided additional funding for the league to establish sanctuaries and maintain habitat protection, continue scientific research and promote and educate others of the threat of extinction to Green Sea Turtles. We also supports Tourism Concern, an organisation dedicated to minimising the negative impact of worldwide tourism. Tourism Concern works to raise awareness and implement change by involving both tourism organisations and host communities.

We have an extensive list of pre-departure documentation which includes maps, regional advice, responsible travel practices and detailed itineraries, and we send this out to our passengers well before their departure to ensure that when they travel they are socially conscious and respectful of their surrounding environments - both during our tours and before/after.

Office policy: We recognise that it is not only on-location staff who have environmental responsibilities but also our administration staff in our offices around the world. All our offices endeavour to be environmentally sound through practising energy conservation, implementing recycling plans and being responsible for the surrounding physical environment. We believe in leading through example and operate in this manner to encourage other businesses and individuals to be considerate of the environment and conserve the natural beauty we currently share.

Carbon Offset Scheme:

Working in partnership with international conservation charity World Land Trust in our continuing quest to establish and maintain our position as a leader in responsible travel, we are offering a new way for our travellers to make a real contribution to the health of the planet - the Carbon Offset Scheme.

World Land Trust is a not-for-profit, international conservation organisation that takes direct action to save rainforest and other biologically important lands. Since it was founded in 1989, it has helped local conservation organisations to purchase and protect over 375,000 acres of threatened habitats in Asia, Europe and Central and South America. There are many organisations offering carbon offsetting services, however we believe that World Land Trust has the most scientifically sound approach and socially responsible philosophy.

When you book your tour with us you will be able to offset a portion of your share of the carbon emissions created while you are on your tour. We will calculate what clients have donated, and donate an additional 10% of the total to World Land Trust. So the more you contribute, the more we can give! We will also absorb all processing fees associated with these payments, so there’s no administration cost to World Land Trust and they can spend the money donated where it counts - protecting threatened habitats worldwide.

What Will Happen to the Contributions?

World Land Trust will fund projects on your behalf through their Carbon Balanced programme, which reduces the amount of damage carbon emissions are doing to the environment. We will not profit from your carbon offsetting donations. Your contributions will be made directly to World Land Trust and we will not receive any direct financial benefit or commission from these donations.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

This I find difficult to answer! So many memorable moments... crossing the mountains to Baracoa, coming upon a local carnival on Sunday... locals high on home brew, roast suckling pig and great music, seeing the reaction of Omar when I presented him with size 8 ladies Levis (he was quite tiny!), visiting a school in Trinidad and being asked to sit and chat. Shedding tears at Che Memorial... Where to stop! Great country, wonderful people. As Terminator says "I'll be back".

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Allow plenty of money for optional extras... not cheap. Bring half the clothes you think you might need and don’t compare the country with any where else you may have visited.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I believe so particularly in the casas we stayed in. I also believe the whole experience was enriching both for us travellers and our hosts.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Do you know that moment coming towards the end of your holiday when you feel you are ready to come home... never happened! I would like to query the policy of charging extra for single accommodation in the Casas. There was an uneven number of females in the group and I was asked for 20 CUC extra per night even tho' the room is 20 CUC regardless of numbers. Perhaps the tour operator would get back to me on this point. Thank you again for taking the time to do this review.

Firstly, we are very happy that Colette has had such a positive experience during her tour of Cuba with us. We work very hard to offer our clients the adventure of a lifetime and it is heartening to hear that Colette has had such a fantastic time meeting local people, enjoying local music and trying the local cuisine - it's what a tour of Cuba is all about. As regards to the query about single supplements, it is explained quite clearly in our pre departure information on our website, in our brochure, and in the information given during the tour that we do not offer single supplements on our Adventure Tours travel style. All single travellers share a room with a group member of the same gender or the tour leader if of the same gender, if necessary. Unfortunately triple rooms are not widely available in casas in Cuba. If a traveller would prefer not to share their accommodation then as a special favour the tour leader may be able to help them to organise another room. However this comes at an additional cost as it is organised on the road and we are not able to secure lower rates at short notice. I hope that this clarifies things. We'd like to thank Colette for her kind words about the tour and about Cuba - it's a fantastic country which offers a wealth of intimate, authentic experiences and is a destination not to be missed.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing new places, meeting new people, experiencing new experiences... everything... just being in a new place and discovering and learning! I especially loved the bicitaxi's, scuba diving, internal flight and steam train as well as scuba diving and wandering and exploring. Loved it all!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take a teeny small travel pillow - some of the pillows were like concrete, others like stones! I survived fine by sleeping on a jumper etc but if I went again I'd take a teeny small light pillow!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Not sure.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great! Loved it!
