Tuscany family activity holiday

How this holiday makes a difference

Our base for this wonderful family activity holiday in Tuscany steeped in local traditions, cultures and is just 700m from the birth place of Leonardo Da Vinci and the stunning town of Vinci.

The 13th century farmhouse we use as our accommodation has been lovingly transformed into apartments as part of an agri-turismo project whilst still retaining a genuine Tuscan 'feel'. Accommodation is strictly limited in the area which allows careful management of tourism in terms of numbers.

Our local partner Simone is pioneering the development of the local economy through tourism and by only working with companies who share his policies on the environment and cultural preservation. Throughout the week guests are encouraged to try the local flavours. Through pizza making lessons, olive oil tasting and Italian cookery lessons families will learn about the fantastic local dishes and help to preserve the traditional recipes. Guests are encouraged to interact with the local community and use the local shops to purchase produce throughout the week. The purchasing of local products spreads the benefits of tourism throughout the wider community.

Story of the holiday provider

The founder of this company gave up his job as a stockbroker who made rich people richer, put a tent and sleeping bag on the back of his bicycle and went travelling. When he returned home he decided to do what he loved best and retrain so that he could set up an activity holiday company. He believes holidays spent lying on a beach gently grilling under a roasting sun are all very well but the memories from awesome experiences in stunning locations, such as white water rafting in the Pyrenees or dog sledding in Lapland, will last far longer than any sun tan.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Simply the location! It was all that you imagine Tuscany to be - a converted farmhouse set in stunning countryside with a view of the surrounding Tuscan countryside that had to be seen to be believed and which afforded the sight of the most wonderful sunsets. That the accommodation was also superb and provided by the most dedicated and hard-working hosts ever made it the most complete location for a holiday in Tuscany. All the local food was pretty stunning too!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

1. Remember the way back to the airport - signage from the direction of Florence to Bologna airport was shockingly lacking.
2. Get Simone to tell you the 'scenic' route from Empoli to Vinci
3. Get Simone to tell you where the ice cream shop in Empoli is as soon as you get there - it really needs to be visited every day and you should not have to wait until Tuesday!
4. Either wear a very good insect repellent in the evening or cover up well.
5. Perhaps consider getting a train to Italy instead of flying to minimize the impact on the environment.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Being in self-catering apartments and so involved in the day to day activities really made us make use of local shops to buy food and drink for use in the apartment, as well as the occasional visit to a local restaurant. So, in this respect, the holiday benefited local people. But the holiday is, by and large, very local, with most of the activities taking place on site. Those activities that took place away from Casa Carbonaia were not that distant and Simone made use of his mini-bus to transport most people. Lastly, it seems as if Italy has really got a better grip on re-cycling than we have in the UK so we couldn't help but minimize the impact on the environment. Oh, and by the way, the hire car was fantastically economical.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A first rate holiday. I would definitely go back. In fact I will!
