Travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.

Flights at Xmas & New Year
For the Christmas and New Year period you need to book your flights early to ensure availability and good value for money. Flights fill up very quickly and are normally impossible to book by the end of November. We recommend Scandinavian Airlines, who offer flights from the UK to Lulea (via Stockholm). We can then collect you from the airport. Rovaniemi and Kemi in Finland are also possible.

How this holiday makes a difference

Our company is a small-scale activity company, based in Swedish Lapland and locally owned. When you choose to buy your holiday directly from us, over three quarters of your money will benefit locally based and owned companies that employ local people. Wherever possible, we use local suppliers for food, materials, detergent, expendable items and equipment.

We cooperate with other locally owned companies for accommodation in hotels and chalets, hire of cars/minibuses and activities we don't do ourselves. We encourage our guests to visit local small businesses and handcraft shops to buy locally produced products and souvenirs e.g. clothes (wool and felt), jewellery, the wooden traditional cup ("kåsa").

To reduce our environmental impact we work with small groups and a "leave no trace" philosophy. We work closely with nature and we avoid being intrusive or harmful. Where possible we use eco-friendly products: food, detergent, materials. Locally sourced meat, such as elk and reindeer, fish such as salmon and pike-perch, vegetables and potatoes - usually organic - are provided during the activity programme. We try to minimise consumption of material and products. We recycle package materials and compost our organic waste. Waste is carried out and package materials are recycled according to our policy. We don't use disposable cutlery, plates and similar.

We try to influence the companies we cooperate with to be more environmental responsible. Depending on your request, we can recommend several accommodations: ordinary hotels that have made no or little extra efforts to be more responsible, companies with chalets varying in how well they are adapt to environmental demand or a small guesthouse which is also a member of Responsible Travel. The guesthouse is a rebuild old vicarage where recycled materials are used and they maintain a dry (compost) toilet system. The cuisine is mainly vegetarian, using organically and locally sourced food whenever possible.

Our company is a member of The Swedish Ecotourism Society and the owner is the chairman of the local Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, a national non-profit organisation that works to conserve nature both within Sweden and globally.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were so many memorable parts, it is almost impossible to select one. However, I would highlight the snowshoe walking in the ancient forest and husky sledging. Also the remote log cabin was an awesome experience, which we all loved

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for the lack of facilities in the log cabin, but don’t be daunted - it is all quite manageable with the help and advice provided. Don’t take too much luggage and rely totally on the clothing provided by the operator for the outdoor activities.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, the holiday provided income to small businesses in the area, and had little impact on the environment

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The holiday was wonderful, largely because of our guide Rolf Lahti. He catered to all our needs, and was very responsive to what we liked. The experience was really non-touristy and we felt like we could begin to understand what life in the arctic is like for the local people. We also found all the other people we met (e.g. Helen) wonderful, and it was nice to use other small businesses in an intimate way.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Driving a husky dog team through the forest and across the lake in extreme conditions (-35).

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The Retreat is a perfect location for those wanting to get away for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in a beautiful location for good wholesome living and new, fun activities. It was home from home and our hosts made sure our every need was catered for making for a very special week.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes - all the activities were either through the retreat or small locally-run organisations. The food was all locally grown and/or fairtrade and the Retreat is run based on sustainable ethics.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

From the arrangements with Rolf (from the operator) to the actual holiday it was all smooth sailing and perfect for our needs. I would thoroughly recommend this holiday and operator for a really special and authentic Lapland experience.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Tough question because there were so many amazing experiences. The husky safari was a definite highlight but so was the opportunity to experience the quieter and more peaceful side of the wilderness through a guided cross country skiing session. The New Year's Eve party across two timezones out on the frozen river was something we'll always have to look back on too!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

There's so much to see and do and everything is so enjoyable we really tried to cram everything in. A few times the pace of the days was a bit hectic and rushed, but we'd made sure that the last couple of days were fairly relaxed (only one activity as opposed to two or three) so that was a good way to finish everything off. But having said that, get out and experience as much as you can of this amazing place!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Local people and businesses were certainly benefited and environmental impact was minimised by the sharing of tour buses with other hotels. That sometimes made for a long bus ride, but the seats were comfy enough to grab a quick snooze, or you could admire the landscape out the window.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely brilliant! New and amazing experiences, incredibly beautiful and memorable scenery, wonderful people and the opportunity to do things that you just can't do anywhere else. Loved our time there, didn't want it to end! A week we'll never forget - thanks Rolf!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The four of us had a fantastic time, despite the low temperatures (-38 C one night). Arctic Adventures provided a well-organised holiday. Rolf was very knowledgeable about Lapland and its nature.
