Thailand family adventure holiday on the River Kwai

Small group family holiday - teen
This is a 'small group family adventure' - specifically for families with teenagers. They are imaginative, fun and challenging itineraries, designed specifically with teenagers in mind. The minimum age on these Teenage tours is 11 (‘teen’ used with poetic licence!) and typically you will join several other families and travel in a group of approx. 16 people. The trips are great value and a great way for you and your family to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is also some flexibility and you'll have plenty of time to yourselves.

How this holiday makes a difference

Community
This tour has a huge variety of experiences to open your family’s eyes to the wonders of Thailand. A family tour is a huge opportunity to educate children about the world around them in a fun way and on this tour we can learn about traditional Thai cooking in Bangkok, history on the River Kwai and wildlife in Khao Sok.

Learning about the local people and culture is central to our trips and how better a way to do this than by immersing yourself in village life. Few travellers get the chance to have such an authentic and meaningful experience as many ‘village visits’ can be poorly organised. Our homestays however are carefully planned to be both an economic benefit to local families and an enjoyable experience for them and for us. We spread out amongst the community and have 2 days in which to get to know our hosts and take part in some of their daily activities. Knowing that the activities and accommodation have been developed with the full involvement and consideration of the village means our stay is both beneficial and authentic and we are made to feel very welcome.

All our leaders in Thailand are locals and we’ve personally trained them all too so they are comfortable in their work and you get great service. It is our policy to generate business and employment opportunities in the countries we travel to by employing local people. Furthermore they can give a real insight into the local culture; anything from learning about the education system, to making sure we don’t fall foul of any taboos!

As well as learning about and respecting local people, we also like to be an economic benefit to them. We do this by using locally owned hotels, spreading our business to a variety of local restaurants.

Environment
As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost.

Story of the holiday provider

This small group operator is just celebrating its 30th year and was originally set up to enrich people’s lives through adventure travel. They find the family travel experience is very popular and groups gel together quickly. Taking your children to local communities creates an instant fascination and can be a natural ice-breaker. Family adventure holidays can offer an opportunity to learn about other lifestyles and break down barriers. There is great advantage to spending time together, doing things you would never normally consider, as opposed to taking a package holiday where your children are separated and sent off to their own area.

Thailand family adventure holiday on the River Kwai

Reviewed 18 Aug 2009 by Robert Brown5 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We've decided that there were higher points, like elephants, tuc-tucs and boat trips but that the whole thing merged into one great experience.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

First, look at your needs. There's a great variety of opportunities, more than most other holiday firms. For this experience pick the one appropriate to your family. in our case, for families with older teenagers. Then just turn up, be prepared to join in and go with the flow.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We certainly provided employment for a whole range of people.
We benefited from the presence of an excellent Thai leader who was able to keep us in touch with the needs and customs of the local people. We were encouraged to see Thailand through the eyes of the Thai people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Whatever happened, travel, weather, losing glasses, feeling queasy, every day was a great experience.
