How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

Care of the environment is one of our main concerns; we inherited the unspoiled nature as we want our descendants to enjoy unspoiled nature as we do today. We do our best so that our guests can enjoy unspoiled nature.

We respect the standards of responsible tourism. To decrease the impact to the environment our hotel re-cycles paper and glass and is also attached to a local biological waste water filter. We use saving light bulbs. We use organic food in a great part. A state agency for clean production has developed a project of waste and energy management for our hotel. We keep to the guidelines prescribed in the project to minimize the impact on the environment.

Our hotel and the tourist board continuously organize cleaning of the rivers, Cetina, Grab i Rude. The owner of the hotel is also the president of the local tourist board. In these activities we include our partners, school children, fishing club, firemen, and the local residents. They educate children in elementary school on the importance of saving the environment. We held number of workshops in our hotel regarding the environment and sustainable tourism development. Every year together with our partners we organize cleaning action for the canyoning, trekking and biking paths.

While in nature with our guests our guides take special care not to spoil the pure nature. Besides the professional training our guides are trained to educate the guests on responsible tourism in the local area as well as brief them before every trip to nature. We limit the number of guests on our programs.

Community

We offer employment and jobs to the local people and open possibilities for many small entrepreneurs. We contributed to employment of young people in the tourism sector as well as engage them in sports and help minimize the trend of them leaving to the big cities.

Exchange of cultural heritage enriches us and our guests for new experiences. We treat our guests as friends. We become family on our programs; we eat together at a big table. The group remains in contact with us and among themselves after the leave. Laughter and friendship are traits of our program.

Before our adventure agency established it’s hotel & activity services, the local region had no tourism pull & was economically undeveloped. The family business that started 1965 as a small restaurant became a hotel in 1994. Both the hotel and the adventure club are family owned. The business employs the local people and the whole family. The company has a huge impact on the local community. Our guests spend and buy in a way that helps the local economy. Our restaurant nurtures authentic gastronomy and uses small local producers for its suppliers (meat, vegetables, fruit, and food cereals) with special emphasis on naturally grown and native sorts. This way we foster authentic food production and offer healthy food.

All of our Adventure programs include local suppliers (guides, skippers, drivers and local guest houses services, museums, and an archeological sight) this way we encourage local people to pursue tourism as a new possibility for them. With our stables we brought back equestrianism to Trilj. Today many youngsters ride here and train for Sinjska Alka – a traditional knight’s tournament held since 1715. In addition to that our equestrian club helps children with disabilities with riding programs. In constructing and maintaining the hotel we have used local furniture manufactures, construction companies, and suppliers and some of the suppliers for the equipment on our adventure programs also have production in Croatia.

Croatia activity holiday

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The beauty of the Croatian coast line, dotted with centuries old villages. The wonderful expertise of the Katarina Boat line and the valuable leadership of Robert, our Croatian bicycle guide. Robert was so knowledgeable about the area, history and customs and also the best out-of-the-way routes.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring along clothespins for hanging biking clothes after washing.
Cash on hand - best in Kunas as many places do not take VISA. According to locals, "shoulder season" is least crowded.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes - entire crew was local. The boat was family owned. Food was provided from local markets and Robert led us to local restaurants on the rides. Locals were happy to provide great service. Trip of this sort, with the biking through villages, increases local interaction and encourages positive relationships.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Never having used this operator or resonsibletravel.com before, we were not sure what to expect - but now we would heartily recommend both as being first class!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The activities were fantastic and the scenery amazing.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just to enjoy themselves - they will be in very good hands.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

All the staff in the hotel and the guides were local - they were all incredibly friendly and helpful. The activities were nearly all based on the river and were muscle-powered - so no polluting motors!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was an excellent holiday enjoyed by children (aged 11,13,14,16,17) and adults alike. We could do as much or as little as we liked - with no pressure. Everything was well organised and safety always came first.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All the adventure. Especially the canyoning which I adored, white water rafting (which was better than my previous experience and great fun), white water kayaking (which was great fun), horse back riding (I managed somehow to go on a fast ride on a stallion) and mountain biking (really hard work at the start but a wonderful day).

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring old trainers that can get wet- you will use them a lot, not just on the canyoning. People with tennis shoes found they were not up to the job on the canyoning. You don’t need to buy special shoes. Relax and just have fun. Its great. If you can add a few days on before or after and stay in Split- so you can visit the islands, not Split so much though as there’s a day during the week for that. On the Split day it would be good to be briefed on the best places to see as it is bigger.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Benefitted local people- Yes. Minimised the impact on the environment- to a degree but there was a reasonable amount of driving. Also they brought Luke and I up separately at the start while they could easily have collected me when he arrived. A very small point.)

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

4.8 stars. Although the group was ridiculously small and Trilj itself had little to offer the adventure was fabulous, the people in the hotel wonderful, the balance of doing and relaxation just right. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventure and fun, wants to experience Croatia without too many tourists and yet wants to feel well looked after.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I booked this holiday for my son, 11, so taking part in all the activities with other children was great. We both would have liked a bit more challenging activities. I loved the old cities we visited & country side.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take some games & other entertainment for children, as there wasn't a games room or a place to socialise with others besides the restaurant or the bar at the hotel. A pool & games room would have been great in the hotel, as there were only bars & restaurants in the town. Check how many families & kids you will actually be with.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Exellent concept, activities for all the family to take part in.I would definately book another 1 next year in another country.
