How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Our local operators’ mission is to tell the world about the natural wonders of Newfoundland and Labrador thereby enhancing the protection of the land and the ocean. They accomplish this by providing respectful, sustainable, educational, and enjoyable tours. Shore excursions are combined with research including pioneering studies on orcas around the North Atlantic.
Together we support local environmental charities and sustainable tourism activities, and provide scholarship to the province’s oldest conservation organization (The Natural History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador). Our local operators are the longest continual supporter of the Protected Areas Association (local World Wildlife Fund affiliate) and join them in campaigns supporting park creation and wise use of the outdoors. They are active supporters of numerous other environmental and sustainable tourism organizations including the International Ecotourism Society, Salmonier Nature Park and the Newfoundland and Labrador Natural History Society.
They have also invested large amounts of time and effort into developing guidelines for the eco-tourism industry in Canada. Awards include: 2008 & 2009 Listed by National Geographic as one of the world’s leading adventure tour operators 2007 & 2008 Awards for pioneering work with expedition ships, from the city of St. John’s and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador 2000 Heritage Canada Sustainable Tourism Award. 1990 Governor General’s Award for Conservation in recognition of pioneering work in eco-tourism.
Community
This holiday is operated by a locally-owned specialist company who employ experienced local staff. Years of experience have introduced them to many vital resource people - whether it be someone with a good well willing to provide visitors with a clean washroom or a retired fisherman who protects the “secret” nesting site of an endangered bird.
Other vital resource people are associated with parks, museums, and other protected areas. Our trip leaders are our most important resource people as they show visitors the anchor site of the Mayflower, the northern tip of the Appalachian Mountains and other local highlights which can’t be found in the guidebooks. Working with local people and the sale of sustainably produced gift items encourages funding back into the local community.
Through our operator’s sister retail operation, an annual scholarship is provided for a post-secondary student who shows leadership in the area of environmental awareness and protection.
