How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
On this tour we visit several National Parks and Forest Recreation areas where our visit helps fund environmental and wildlife protection schemes. At Taroko Gorge we stay in a ‘village’ of log cabins that blend in almost seamlessly with the environment and which supports the preservation of Atayal aboriginal culture - the interior textiles, lamps and paintings are all aboriginal hand-made artifacts. There is an Atayal culture exhibition area where Atayal elders demonstrate how they weave cloth and rushes in the traditional method. Handicrafts produced here are truly beautiful and their purchase helps keep alive these endangered indigenous crafts.
Community
By travelling in a small group (maximum 14) we are able to eat at small restaurants and drink at local bars without impinging on the local community. Where possible we eat meals made with seasonal produce. This tour is lead by an experienced English-speaking tour leader from Taiwan who has spent time in the UK. As well as guiding the group he will also help to introduce the political and cultural background of this complex island. We thus gain a more intimate understanding of the culture we are travelling through. By using bilingual leaders we are also able to interact more closely with local people.
