How Greenland holiday, dogsledding and skiing makes a difference

Environment

We consider running these trips our way of giving back to the environment as our guests return better educated and likely to vote or support these environments, their culture and wildlife. People learn on the trip about the effect of global warming – the impact that something as simple as losing the lens cap of a camera might have on fragile environment such as this.

This is a guided, active, self propelled wilderness adventure. We minimize the use of motor vehicles. This is the only tourism activity in this geographic area. Once we are dropped off in the wilderness, we are skiing and sledding across a landscape, noticing everything, but leaving nothing but footprints in our wake.

Every visitor traveling behind us will arrive feeling they are the first explorer to the area. Wildlife skulls, antlers, and artefacts are left as they were found. The little garbage we generate is carried out with us. Fresh water sources are fiercely protected against contamination.

Community

On this trip we hire one local guide per trip. Interestingly enough, with the polar Inuit here, it is like stepping back in time. They don’t travel by snowmobile, but rather by dog sled. We ski alongside and occasionally grab the side of a sled as we go. Our relationship with the local community here stems from when we used to fly in from Resolute to Greenland on personal ski trips on which we were invited along the coast of Greenland. We now travel with the Polar Inuit on the trip and share in their traditional lifestyle along the way, providing them extra income. We also stay a local hotel there.

From a North American perspective, the trip is also interesting in the sense that much of the food supplies bought locally come from Denmark. The local hunters are still subsistence hunters. The income derived from our trip helps them buy fuel for their machines and food for their households. The Canadian Inuit actually look up to them and their best practices. They govern themselves and manage their own resources according to age-old sustainability practices. They don’t carry travellers when they go hunting, unlike what happens in Canada.

Our trip goals include educating and connecting people to nature and the outdoors through natural history based expeditions. We diligently promote cultural preservation and environmental awareness from our pre-departure information to our no trace practices in the field. As our guests explore the wonders of our world, we hope to help everyone gain new insights and perspectives on other cultures and environments as well as our own and foster a sense of our interconnectedness.
