Greenland holiday, self guided walking
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We have a close working relationship with our suppliers and encourage them to share our concerns about minimising impact on the environment. Many are becoming much more focused on the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly tourism, understanding how fragile the Arctic environment is and the need to protect it.
A hiking holiday is one of the most responsible ways of experiencing such a unique and unspoilt wilderness, with minimal impact on the environment, providing guidelines are followed by hikers. We provide our clients with relevant information prior to their departure to ensure that they follow guidelines once out and about on hikes.
We are proud to hold the AITO 3-star Responsible Travel accreditation recognising our commitment to sustainable tourism. We support a number of extremely worthwhile causes including the Iceland Nature Conservation Association (INCA) and the Friends of Scott Polar Research Institute’s (SPRI) project ‘Eurasian Arctic: Melting Ice’ - an ongoing in-depth study of glaciers and icecaps with regard to their sensitivity to climate change.
Back home we have an active environmental policy in our office including recycling bins throughout; printing our brochures on FSC accredited paper from sustainable forests; systems to encourage a paperless office; and movement sensor lights which use the latest energy-saving long-life elements.
Community
We are dedicated to ensuring that local communities and environment are treated with the utmost care and respect. Tourism is an important income source for the remote communities scattered along the coast, providing much needed revenue, supporting local businesses, creating employment and contributing to the overall sustainable development of these settlements.
We strive to ensure that the impact of tourism on communities is positive and work closely with our suppliers in maintaining this. We use locally-owned and run hotels and activity operators, who are passionate about their beautiful environment and committed to its conservation.
Our guests are encouraged to respect the native Inuit, their culture, traditions and customs, and support their host community by buying local handicrafts and visiting the Tasiilaq Museum to learn more about this rich heritage.
