How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

Our eco tour company strongly believes that the following five components are a minimum requirement to be considered an eco tourism product; small groups which ensures the integrity of the tour and provides a better experience; low impact to the environment and local inhabitants; interpretative eco sessions on recent and ancient history, flora and fauna species and geological significance of the region; cultural values and traditions; and local community involvement.

Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat has effective initiatives in place to minimise the impact on the environment including low visual impact & energy efficient log pine building construction; all guest water collected from rainfall; all waste water treated on site in a chemical free system; all plastics, glass, cans, paper & cardboard is recycled; and only biodegradable cleaning products used.

The day trip to Flinders Chase National Park is with a tour company that are committed to long term sustainability and take their responsibility to the environment, guests and community seriously. This is reflected in the company achieving advanced ecotourism accreditation and the development of an operational code of ethics relating to wildlife interactions. They have sought independent verification from Ecotourism Australia, an association promoting authentic, responsible and sustainable tourism, assisting tourism businesses to deliver quality experiences with minimal impact on the environment.

We are proud to hold the AITO 3-star Responsible Travel accreditation recognising our commitment to sustainable tourism. We support a number of extremely worthwhile organisations and causes, including the Born Free Foundation and Friends of Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) at the University of Cambridge. Their pioneering research investigates social and environmental issues in the Arctic and Antarctic, such as global warming.

Back home we have an active environmental policy in our office including recycling bins throughout; printing our brochures on FSC accredited paper from sustainable forests; systems to encourage a paperless office; and movement sensor lights which use the latest energy-saving long-life elements.

Community

We are dedicated to ensuring that local communities and the environment are treated with the utmost care and respect by visitors. All the places visited on this tour benefit from the positive effects of tourism; economic benefits for local businesses and enterprises and employment for residents, thus contributing to the overall economic growth of each region. We support local communities by using locally owned and run hotels, activity operators and guides, and encouraging guests to visit local attractions, eat in local restaurants and buy local produce and crafts.

The eco tour company we use have a team of long term employees and family members - knowledgeable, dedicated and passionate; they believe in local community involvement and actively support cultural values and traditions. All the guides are qualified and accredited in their particular area, with an extensive understanding of the unique plants, mammals, birdlife, geology, and indigenous and colonial history. They have a huge passion for showcasing Australia to others.

Day tour/Attraction Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
