Our cycling philosophy is to create self guided tours that allow cyclists to experience the very best cycling in Catalonia where protecting and enjoying the beautiful natural environment is paramount to everything we set out to achieve.

Thanks to our encyclopaedic knowledge of the region we feel confident that we’ve designed the perfect Spanish cycling holiday with seasonal wild flowers, mile upon mile of untouched coastline and an abundance of picturesque rural scenes adding to the overall thrill of cycling in Catalonia.

As this is a self-guided cycling holiday we’ve made sure to produce a suggested itinerary that includes many of the rural trails featured with the cycletouring network with the Baix Emporda region providing quintessential Catalonian landscapes dotted with medieval villages and traditional local markets.

Arriving at a village square, taking a coffee and watching the world go by is what cycling in Catalonia is all about with seasonal festivals and, of course, the wonderful weather both increasing the satisfaction of stretching your legs over some truly glorious countryside.

The gastronomic delights to be found in the region are legendary and we’ve incorporated many examples of local artisans to assist you in your quest to sample a true taste of the Catalonian good life. Wine tasting and circular trails in Peralada, organic olive oil producers, rice mills, cheese makers and boutique jam factories can all be found as part of the suggested self-guided cycling itinerary with a tapas bar tour and the fish market in Palamos offering exceptional insight as to why this region is so revered by locals and visitors alike. Please note: some producers and sites of interest may be closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Aside from the gastronomy, we’ve also included many of the region’s cultural and artistic places of interest too with the Dali museum, the Greco-Roman ruins at Empuries and visits to the Museu de la Confitura and the Museo de pesca in Palamos all complementing relaxing days in and out of the saddle.

The accommodation for this cycling in Catalonia holiday is a characterful and charming location that’s been hand-picked for the friendly nature of the staff and the outstanding surrounding landscapes. Dining options have also been carefully chosen with contemporary Catalan cooking putting a twist on traditional meals and top-end tapas.

Environment

Each village has at least one recycling point and a general bin area. Our office is home based and we endeavour to run a ‘minimum paper‘ administration and use recycled paper and recycled cartridges.

Small rucksacks are provided with the bikes and guests are asked to put all rubbish in it for disposal at the end of the day. Packed lunches are provided in reusable containers and refillable water bottles.

Fresh food is sourced locally, and menus are very much dictated by the seasons, which reduces transportation. Strawberries and peaches only appear on the menu in the summer, and pumpkins, mushrooms, apples and pears are on the table in autumn. Our local bakery produces fresh bread every day from a wood burning oven, free range eggs and chicken are delivered from the smallholdings to the butcher, and weekly markets provide organic produce.

The Emporda is an area of great natural wealth. Its situation and layout means that it provides a habitat for a number of species which are under threat of disappearing. There are three areas of special interest that you might want to visit by bike. The Isles de Medes, a tiny archipelago which has a unique flora and fauna system, supporting a lavish marine life, the Aguamolls Natural Park, a wetland home to over300 species of birds, and the Gavarres Natural Park, where wild boar roam through ancient cork, oak, and pine forests. Guidelines are given to our guests on arrival regards using the Cycle Network in a responsible manner.

Community

Our aim is to provide quality self guided and guided tours, enabling our guests to experience the natural beauty of the Emporda region of Catalunya without damaging the environment. The main economy in the area is based around agriculture and tourism. Through our cycling tours we support the local economy by booking directly with locally run and managed hotels and restaurants, including the ‘Turisme Rural' initiative. We support local markets and producers by including visits and tastings by bike on our travels.

Preserving local culture is of paramount importance to our cycling tours. Although Catalunya is in Spain, and everyone here speaks Spanish, the first language, particularly in rural areas is Catalan.

We are based in Baix Emporda which is very much a rural community that takes great pride in its heritage, particularly since the end of the Franco regime, when many local traditions were banned for the Catalan people. Every village has a strong sense of community, and there are always festivals, concerts, film shows, craft fairs, markets throughout the year. We have started a regular articles page on our website of any forthcoming events, and we actively encourage our guests to participate. Our tour always includes several visits to local producers.

We believe that experiencing local culture, makes a holiday memorable and worthwhile, and the best way to do it is on a bike! In many ways this strong sense of tradition is what makes this area so unique and worthy of a visit. Unlike some other areas of Spain, the Baix Emporda area of Catalunya is largely unspoilt, has managed to preserve its language and traditions, and has retained its own identity. We feel very privileged to live in such a beautiful place, and would like the opportunity to share the experience with like minded travellers through cycling with us.

We recently sponsored and hosted a charity cycle to raise funds for the Football Foundation of South Africa which aims to break down racial barriers through sport.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?


We arrived in Figueres to start our Food and Wine Lovers Cycle tour, and amazingly discovered a Catalan Food and Wine
Festival in the Ramblas just by our hotel! We paid our €10 and were given a wine glass engraved with the Festival's emblem, then visited many of the wine producers from the area and sampled various wines and foods local to Catalonia.
It was a fantastic introduction to our tour and gave us a real idea of which vineyards and producers to focus our cycle trips on. Our guide Alan was wonderfully knowledgeable about the local producers and when we mentioned his name we got very favourable responses.


2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?


Make sure you book extra bags for your return journey by plane. Take paper tissue with you on your bike journey just in case you need to adjust your bike/ mend a puncture. I would suggest not eat in the Hotel restaurants, we found much
better food elsewhere.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?


We spent our money locally. We went to local producers and bought directly from them. We reduced pollution by cycling.
The part of Catalonia where we cycled is crisscrossed with beautiful cycle paths, so safe and off the beaten track.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?


It was great. We could do as much as we wanted. We could have made it as hard or easy as we liked. We loved being active. We weren't always lucky with the weather. We had one really wet day and one really windy one, but that's
unavoidable. We loved cycling so much that we asked to keep the bikes for a couple more days. Amazingly, we managed to loose weight, even though we ate like kings our entire trip.

We ate, shopped and stayed in local establishments.

Alan from the tour operator was very helpful and accommodating during our entire vacation. It was a wonderful experience, great trails, food and memories to last a lifetime. I am planning my next trip now!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?


The entire holiday was superb and it's impossible to choose any one part. The trip had an excellent mix of historic and cultural sites, stunning scenery, plenty of time to explore the boutique wineries and artisan producers and even to relax on the beach at the end of the day. Our accommodation was a mix consisting of a Century Tower House through to a Palace. This is the ultimate food and wine lover's tour; a gastronomic delight. Our hosts were incredible and went above and beyond to ensure we had a fantastic holiday.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?


If you have a few extra days, take them, you won't regret it. Every day brought something different. Although we got by just fine without being fluent in the language, it would have been nice to chat to the locals a bit more they were so friendly, so study up a bit.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?


Yes, the villages prided themselves on serving local produce and wines.
Our transport was by bike, the tracks were in excellent condition and well formed so left only minimal impact on the eco-system.


4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?


Everything about this holiday was excellent, and exceeded expectations. We have already recommended this holiday to our friends, and would do it again ourselves!
