La Gomera self guided walking holiday, Canary Islands
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
The island is of volcanic origin and roughly circular; it is about 22 km in diameter and rises to 1487 m at the island's highest peak, Garajonay. Its shape is rather like an orange that has been cut in half and then split into segments, which has left deep ravines or “barrancos” between them. These “barrancos”, in turn, are covered by the laurel rain forest. The upper reaches of this densely wooded region are covered in lush and diverse vegetation: they form the protected environment of Spain's Garajonay National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. By being added to UNESCO World Heritage listing, the site benefits of strict preservations plans, both culturally and environmentally.
By discovering the area in an environment-friendly manner (walking), you will have plenty of time to enjoy the natural wonders of this fabulous island, while minimizing the impacts on the surrounding nature.
We avail of a Travelers Code of Conduct and all our documents are printed on recycled paper. Our staff also follows an Environmental policy (e.g: only using hard copies when necessary or switching off the lights.
Last but not least, as hikers by passion, we have a strong ethic about respecting the places we go to and their environment, either for business or personally (e.g: not leaving any rubbish behind us during a day walk or using reusable water containers), and we encourage our guests to act responsibly while travelling.
Community
Due to its geographic location, La Gomera Island benefits of a rich cultural heritage. One of the things you may notice during the walk is people whistling in the mountains. This is a unique way of communication, called “silbo gomero”, which consists of people communicating across deep ravines by means of an amazing whistled speech. This is unique to the island and has been documented since Roman times.
The local wine is distinctive, and is often accompanied with tapas of local cheese, roasted pork or goat meat. Other culinary specialities include almogrote, a cheese spread, and miel de palma, a syrup honey-like extracted from palm trees. So yes, like everywhere in Spain, gastronomy is a big part of the local culture!
We are commited to work with local hotels and restaurants only. Actually, we personally know each person we deal with as we go on ground to tailor make these holidays for you.
Every day, your luggage will be brought from hotel to hotel by Ector, our local transporter, fully dedicated to deliver his best services in a friendly yet professional manner.
