The Great Ocean Walk, walking holiday in Australia
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We operate to strict environmental guidelines, in accordance with being advanced eco certified. It is our intention to make sure the Great Ocean Walk trail we use is in as good a condition as possible for our walkers and every walker that wants to make the journey into the future.
Many of our programs are operational; behind the scenes we harvest rainwater, supplement our power with solar, recycle within what’s collect via council collections and have additional separation of bulk cardboard and newspaper. Our vegetable garden grows essentials and herbs and our composting makes for lovely fertiliser. We grow some of our own fruit and encourage our guests to be thoughtful with their water use. We have landscaped our site using endemic species to our region and work with Conservation Volunteers to keep non native species until control on our lodge site.
In conjunction with Conservation Volunteers Australia we operate a walk a month that contributes to Great Ocean Walk track maintenance. Our guides volunteer their time for these walks and all the profit goes to CVA to make sure the region we showcase is there for the future.
We encourage people to leave their cars in Melbourne and join our complimentary transfers. This takes up to 10 cars off the Great Ocean Road for every trip we operate.
Community
We work on a daily basis with local suppliers, guides, drivers, National Park authorities and tourism bodies to operate the best trips that we can. It seems obvious to us that having a strong, mutually-respecting relationship with the people who have expert knowledge in the region, terrain, food, culture and language, will result in more successful walk. Along with the local crew, travellers are sure to gain an insight into what it’s like to live locally and have the pleasure of encountering people with real character. We have found that our walkers enjoy these unexpected experiences.
Our guides and drivers work very hard to help our travellers understand more about the region, its history, traditions and indigenous language and culture which then helps everyone to feel a little more informed about the lands they are passing through. This could be answering questions, encouraging interaction with local people or just having a chat, it is our desire to help all parties understand more of each other.
