The Indio Maiz Biosphere reserve is one of Central Americas most important and biologically diverse regions. This trip helps conservation of this area and the Rio San Juan in the following ways:
We make a donation on behalf of every trip participant to the Pure Earth Project. This project has three principle focuses - reforestation in Leon and Chinandega regions, forest conservation (avoided deforestation) on the Caribbean coast and support of local conservation projects in the regions we work. Contracting local guides increases awareness to their communities of the value of this area and also reduces the pressure on the local environment by activities such as hunting and wildlife poaching, which are often found in these remote areas.
Before trip departure we give a full briefing to all participants on safety, sustainable trip practices and ways in which to limit environmental impact and observe the wildlife. Our guides are supplied with all natural bath products for use on tours and we strongly encourage all our tour participants to do the same. We have a zero trash policy on our tours thus we take all of our litter with us to safe and designated area for disposal. When we do need to use a boat we use a small horsepower engine that has less environmental impact than bigger engines. The very nature of the trip has a low environmental impact because as most transport is by kayak and thus non fossil fuel emitting.
The foundation of our tour company is built on sustainable practices which is exemplified by sustainable policy and responsible travel guidebook. Our chosen partner practices sustainable hotel management and is certified by rainforest allaiance.
We encourage people to offset their flights with our chosen non-profit carbon neutral company partner. We reduce the carbon footprint of the trip by taking local boat at the start of the trip and during the trip.

We contract only local guides and use locally owned services for boat transport, local produce and accommodation. This trip provides an alternative means of income to the Rama indigienous community to work in tourism as we use their services as guides and accommodation. Our chosen partners work with a community health care project and other social projects in the Rio San Juan. They also follow the principles of responsible travel. All our tour participants are provided with a digital version of our Responsible Travel Guidebook, which outlines ways socially responsible with the community and local culture of Nicaragua.
