How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

As care of the environment is paramount to Tanzanian tourism long term, we work with suppliers who ensure that their camps and activity have as small an impact on the environment as possible, with minimal water being wasted and all rubbish being taken away by the team. We believe that sensitive and sustainable tourism is an invaluable help to developing the communities and preserving the environments of sub-Saharan Africa. So we encourage more people to visit Africa; promoting the positives through enjoyable and informative trips – whilst maximising the benefits these generate for the local economies, environments and host communities in Africa. We aim to be a very fair company – to our travellers, to those who work for us and with us, and to the areas and communities which host our travellers.

We actively support areas where our traveller’s visits will help to conserve habitats and develop local communities. We aim to work with suppliers who provide local employment and training and who offer good quality, environmentally and culturally sensitive activities. We encourage local community participation in tourism projects and over the years we have supported a number of successful, small-scale conservation, community and educational projects in Africa.

Responsible tourism is at the heart of what we do and as part of our trips we also encourage our travellers to do their bit with informative suggestions on how to best support the local economy, minimise their footprint on the environment and to be culturally sensitive of the area they are visiting.

When booking your camping safari to Tanzania you’ll be offered the opportunity to offset the carbon generated by your international flights. Although it’s not an exact science, it is thought that a flight to Africa equates to about £20 per person in carbon emissions. The money donated to this initiative will be given to projects which can offset our traveller's carbon emissions in a verifiable way.

Community

We believe in using locally based suppliers wherever possible as this camping safari shows. The trip is always guided by a highly skilled locals, and the mobile camps used are run by an excellent team of Tanzanians. This not only enhances travellers experiences as they have the chance to interact with local people and learn from their knowledge and lifelong experience of the country, but also helps with the economy and employment.

There is also the opportunity to visit a traditional Maasai village during this trip. In return for learning about their traditions and culture, our travellers visit gives a financial contribution used towards children’s schooling and towards medicines for both villagers and their highly prized live stock.

Story of the holiday provider

In the 1980s the director of this company, Chris, volunteered at a rural bush school in Zimbabwe, teaching A level Maths for 3 years. Whilst there, he realised there wasn’t a decent guidebook for the area and so he successfully secured a contract to write one himself, including Namibia and Botswana. Chris now owns an African tour company that makes use of his extensive knowledge and passion for the area. He insists that all staff visit the places they sell every year so they know exactly what they’re talking about and can supply travellers with all of the options available to them.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

"Camping" out in the wilds of Africa. The quote marks are because it was the most comfortable camping I have ever experienced. The tents were bigger than our bedroom, the food was incredible and the hot, private in-tent camp shower so refreshing. But we were truly out in the wild and could hear baboons near our camp and find elephant dung behind the tents.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You don't need to bring boots or other rugged travel gear. We went in early June and mosquitoes were not a problem at all. Not a single bite. You still want to take your anti-malarial meds just in case but we didn't need the headnets and deet. Make sure to bring plenty of cash for tipping the wonderful staff.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I didn't so much get the feel it benefited the local population as a whole but the staff certainly seemed to love their jobs and I get the impression they are paid well. The camps were set up to minimalize their impacts on the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Wonderful wonderful wonderful! A great time, well planned and provided for.
