Community
This tour supports local community outcomes by educating and involving community members on the conservation and biology of sea turtles. We provide opportunities for travellers to work alongside marine species experts to learn and personally contribute something back to local turtle conservation efforts. We use local and remote accommodation suppliers, source and support local produce, and profit return into local turtle research projects.
Environment
This program is provided by Australia’s largest not for profit, community based conservation organisation. Participation in this program supports the ongoing flatback turtle (Natator depressus) research in the region and any profits generated from the trips donated back to the turtle research project.
This turtle research program is committed to the long term protection of critical nesting habitats for the Australian flatback sea turtle. Our goals are to:
- Collect valuable scientific data whilst monitoring the range of flatbacks in the Broome region,
- Assist in future species classifications and,
- Educate and involve community members on the conservation and biology of sea turtles The flatback sea turtle is currently listed internationally as Data Deficient (IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) with review to a potential Vulnerable classification currently underway. Flatbacks in Western Australia are listed as Rare or likely to become extinct. The annual monitoring of nesting flatback turtles is gaining for the first time in the area data on population size and genetics, any climate changes in beach temperatures and the migration movements of nesting turtles to be tracked from 2009 onwards. The conservation and research activities also assists in improving the level of understanding of the biology of sea turtles for the general public through school presentations, volunteer and staff training on best practice handling protocols and by media representation of the programs and the results.
Best practice protocols are adopted during the turtle research activities in accordance with the WA Department of Environment and Conservation. International protocols are also adopted to reduce the level of human impact with the natural nesting process when on patrol.
Accommodation used for this program has been built with the highest principles of sustainability to ensure quality experience and minimal environmental impact. Architect designed, it features solar powered, an energy monitoring system, passive solar design and cross ventilation, elevated boardwalks linking accommodation to minimise visitor impact, use of eco decking a composite wood decking which contains recycled polypropylene plastics and wood bi-products, water conservation principals, use of biodegradable cleaning / bathroom products and on site waste treatment system.
We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
