The Project Challenge
Despite its popularity as a tourist destination Nepal remains one of the least developed nations in the world. Life expectancy is very low and half of the population lives below the absolute poverty line. The country’s lack of infrastructure and natural resources also mean that it is heavily reliant on foreign aid.
The provision of education is of particular concern, making it an area where volunteer work can make a real difference. Although the past 50 years have seen a dramatic expansion in facilities, educational management, quality, relevance and access have not improved in tandem. For your project work you will help in a school or local community project.
Amongst these are schools which have been established specifically for the benefits of street children and children from the poorest backgrounds, who otherwise would be deprived of any proper formal education. Resources at the schools are minimal and sufficient numbers of teachers are often lacking. Consequently, there is a great need for support and input from volunteers who bring energy, English and fun to the schools. This helps compensate for deficiencies in basic resources and can make a real difference to the quality of the children’s education.
Previously, volunteers have found themselves involved a number of extra-curricular activities at their schools, as well as providing personal language tuition or teacher training for local staff. The projects are well organised so that volunteers can make a good contribution in a relatively short amount of time.
We have a Nepalese country manager that manages our projects full time and ensures that there is a genuine requirement for work in the projects that you will visit. These projects will also receive our longer term volunteers so they are closely monitored at all times.
The Challenge Journey
- We travel in small groups to minimise our impact on the environment and local culture.
- This trip is operated in country by a Nepalese company which provides employment for local people and supports its own local projects.
- Accommodation is in small locally owned tea houses throughout this trip providing a business for local people in this remote region. Your meals will also be taken in tea houses creating revenue for these businesses.
- Your local guide and trek staff are all Nepalese and will travel with you through out the trip.
- The porters we use are well treated in terms of loads they carry and pay they receive. They are provided with appropriate clothing for the trek.
- We encourage clients to use boiled water rather than using bottled water. Our Foundation
We have our own foundation, a registered charity, which our travellers and volunteers can join us in supporting. The aims of the foundation are; the advancement of education, the relief of poverty and sickness and the preservation and protection of good health through the provision of financial assistance, volunteers and such other forms of support as the council members may from time to time determine.

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
