Small group adventure - Comfort trips

What is a small group adventure?
It's a great way to travel! Whether you are travelling on your own, with a partner or with friends, a small group trip is a fantastic way to see the world. You'll travel on a fixed itinerary that has been designed to help you discover the best of region. From the known highlights, the hidden gems that you won't find in the guidebooks.

Itineraries run on set departure dates, accompanied every step of the way by an English speaking local group leader. You chose the itinerary and the date that suits you best and you book on.

Why travel on a small group adventure?
Small groups allow us to explore where larger tour groups can't. Our maximum group size of 16 travellers allows us to use local transport to get from A to B, to visit rural villages, spend time with the locals and even stay at a local home overnight, and it allows us to give our travellers genuine, real life experiences of the countries we are visiting; what you'll be doing and how you'll travel depends entirely on your chosen itinerary.

Is an adventure right for me?
The word adventure means something different to everyone, and our range of trips reflects that. Whether you want to explore local markets, visit out of the way temples and meet local people or go on an early morning safari drive searching for the 'big five', we'll have a trip for you. If you are looking for a physical challenge such trekking the Kokoda Track or summiting Kilimanjaro, we can help with that too.

So what can I expect on this trip?
This is one of our Comfort trips, designed for travellers looking for more inclusions in their itinerary, a higher standard of accommodation and more focus on private vehicles over public transport.

Comfort trips are aimed at the adventure traveller who wants to discover the world up close, but with some creature comforts along the way. Dependent on the itinerary, there may still be a night multi-share accommodation (at a homestay for example), but this will be to ensure you don't miss out on a fantastic experience. Camping trips will usually stay in permanent, tented camps or some of the safari options may be lodge based.

You'll stay in predominantly 3 ½ star and above tourist class hotels with private, en suite facilities, although some itineraries will still include the opportunity to stay with a local family, spend a night on an overnight train or camp out somewhere amazing (without the hassle of putting up your own tent!).

You'll find a number of the meals are included (as per your itinerary) and when eating together we'll focus on smaller, often family run restaurants, often eating where the locals eat and ensuring that you are still getting an authentic travel experience.

Can I book my flights with you?
Yes! We are a fully ATOL bonded tour operator meaning that we can book flights from the UK as part of your holiday package. Just ask us for a quote including flights when you make your enquiry.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Kokoda track trekking holiday in Papua New Guinea

The very ethos of our style of travel is responsible; small groups on fully escorted tours, experiencing the very best of a region, a culture and a landscape, with a friendly local hand guiding the way. Our itineraries are designed to give our travellers real life experiences without compromising the part of the world through which we are journeying, this is our commitment as a global tour operator.

The 90 kilometre Kokoda Track is an arduous trek beginning in the village of Kokoda, crossing the Owen Stanley Range and working its way west to Ower’s Corner, perched high on the Sogeri Plateau. The remote trail snakes through ridges and deep gullies, passing through remote villages and visiting the battlefields of some of the bloodiest conflicts of the Second World War. We are the only operator who works alongside a local co-operative made up of 11 villages to ensure that the local communities along the track benefit directly from visitors walking the trail.

Your support crew of guides and personal porters and will be made up from members of these villages, direct descendants of those who helped the Australian diggers in whose footsteps you are following. This employment of locals, in an area where jobs and opportunities are scarce not only provides economic enhancement to the region, but also encourages the acquisition of new skills by those trained as guides.

The campsites and village huts we stay in along the track are all owned by the local villages. Although the facilities will be basic, travellers will be encouraged throughout the trek to maintain the trail as they find it, an example of this will be carrying rubbish out of the jungle rather than disposing of it en route. There will also be the opportunity to make purchases at various villages we pass through. The organically grown local fruits available in Efogi I are worth keeping some small change available for both for refreshment and to further support local economy.

Our goal when following the Kokoda Track is to experience one of the World’s classic overland walks whilst paying homage to tragic, yet fascinating history of the region and admiring the rugged beauty that pervades all else. We aim to leave nothing of ourselves behind to pollute the trail for those who come after us. This is one of the reasons which recommend travelling with refillable water bottles and using purification tablets en route. Your local guides will always direct you to the best fill up points and due to the humidity of the region you will get through a lot of water. Plastic bottles are no friend the environment and a water bottle or hydration pack is encouraged for all trekkers.

We are proud to be a carbon neutral company, offsetting all our global carbon emissions. On this trip, we offset 423kg per passenger, per trip on top of which, we’ll give you a carbon offset option should you book your flights to Papua New Guinea through us. Through these offset schemes, significant financial contributions are being made on behalf of our business, suppliers, staff and travellers to internationally certified carbon abatement projects, equating to over AU$1 million since 2007. Since then, we have offset over 45,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. That's equal to approximately the amount of carbon that 2,796,047 trees would absorb over 10 years, or taking over 4,753 passenger cars off the road for an entire year!

As a company, our responsibilities don’t stop when our tours end. We run and support a variety of projects globally, from healthcare, education, human rights, child welfare, sustainable development and environmental and wildlife protection. Our own in house foundation has been in operation for over 11 years; a not-for-profit fund that has distributed over AU$3 million to more than 70 non-government organisations since 2002. Donations come from our travellers and are then matched by us dollar for dollar.
