How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

The hands on workshop on Ometepe Island builds awareness of important environmental and social problems that are faced in developing countries and shows them ways they can make a difference in their home country. For every tour participant a donation is made to the Pure Earth Project

This project has three main areas of focus – reforestation in Leon and Chinandega regions, forest conservation (avoided deforestation) on the Caribbean coast and support of local conservation projects in the regions we work. Donations from this project area equally divided between three aspects of the project. .For the next year we will be funding the efforts of a local NGO that is working to conserve sea turtles in Chacocente reserve. This reserve is one of seven critically important nesting sites for Olive Ridley Sea turtles in the world because they nest on these beaches in mass numbers in a phenomenon known as Arribadas.

Contracting local guides plays a part in spreading awareness to their communities of the value of their home. Employing local guides also reduces the pressure on the local environment by activities such as hunting and wildlife poaching, which are found in some of the remote regions that we visit.

Before trip departure we give a full briefing to all participants on safety, culture, sustainable trip practices and ways in which to limit environmental impact and observe the wildlife.

The foundation of our tour company is built on sustainable practices, which are exemplified by our sustainable policy and responsible travel guidebook. Our policy outlines principles that we follow such as a zero trash policy on tours and use of small engine boats where possible.

Community

This tour brings benefits to local community by contracting local guides in every destination. This is a particularly valuable source of income for more remote communities such as in Miraflor Reserve and Chacocente reserve.

We only contract locally owned services for transport, food and accommodation. This tour supports small local businesses such as street vendors, local restaurants and craftsmen throughout Nicaragua.

The hands on workshop on Ometepe island supports a valuable community outreach program in this area. This program works to empower the local community by programs and projects which include: improving the profitability and reliability of present farming operations, establishment of tree nurseries and higher value crops, reversal of ecological problems caused by erosion, chemicals, and deforestation, involvement in rectifying immediate health needs of local communities and providing space and materials for "continuing education" and workshops focused on building individual skill sets for local folk.

All our tour participants are provided with a digital version of our Responsible Travel Guidebook, which outlines socially responsible etiquette within the community and local culture of Nicaragua.
