Wilderness accommodation in Finland
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We cooperate a lot with Metsähallitus, one of their Visitor Centers “Petola” is situated only 700 meters from the hotel. Petola Visitor Centre offers versatile information on Finland’s large carnivores - brownbear (Ursus arctos), wolf (Canis lupus), lynx (Lynx lynx) and wolverine (Gulo gulo) and also information on Friendship Park, Hiidenportti National Park, Oulujärvi Hiking Area, Lauttavaara Nature Study Forest and Kostamus Strict Nature Reserve. Information on hiking trails in Kuhmo and Kainuu, as well as, information on hiking and outdoor recreation possibilities in all parts of Finland. Information on nature conservation and protected areas.
Like all over in Finland, recycling is part of our everyday life in all parts of the hotel. All paper, food etc will be recycled as Finnish law says. We also aim to lower our carbon footprint by using compact fluorescent lamps and use regular taxi for airport transfers. In the hotel rooms we mention our clients also to wash washing towels only when necessary. Clients are advised to put dirty towels to the bathroom floor when required new ones. Bedlinens will be changed once a week during stay. Temperature in the hotel rooms is generally +21 degrees. In our “Practical Information” leaflet we ask clients to contact reception when more/less temperature is needed.
Community
We work very closely with local companies. Some of the safari providers are independent one man business’s. They have a passion for their activity. They have grown up in the area and can pass on lots of historical and cultural facts. They have a great knowledge of their surroundings and the nature, which they enjoy to pass onto their clients during the activities so as they get the best out of the experience. Many local associations also play a part in the tourism of Kuhmo, e.g. once a week, during winter, a local Folklore group visits the hotel playing, singing and dancing together with our guests.
Our partners (transportation, food, activity companies, etc.) are also from the region. We buy and use as much home produce as possible, e.g. berries, mushrooms, fish. Our rye bread has been created together with the nearby bakery. We use lots of local and natural material as decoration, such as stones, nature flowers, moss and leaves instead of exported flowers.
