Travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.

How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

Our company was born out of our love for nature and desire to share the magnificent beauty of Lapland with others. We are committed to sustainability practices that protect the local and global environment. This includes conserving energy, minimising waste production, recycling and a leave no trace policy in outdoor activities. Guests are provided with healthy and sustaining food, locally and organically grown whenever possible.

Off-trail cross-country skiing is the main method of travelling for this holiday. This type of skiing was used historically by our ancestors; it is the best way to travel in the wilderness with least environmental impact. We travel slowly and with our own power, taking time to deeply experience, commune with and learn about nature.

We encourage train travel and offer transfer from the main train stations around us. When we need to transport guests over longer distances we use small fuel efficient cars.

Community

This holiday is a small scale experience offering time for genuine experiences and encounters with the culture and nature of Lapland. We are a small company working exclusively with local guides and suppliers to bring you an authentic experience that benefits the local economy. Our area of Sweden suffers from high employment and depopulation. Most young people, particularly young women, are forced to move to cities in the south to find work. By supporting our local business you are helping to ensure our region and our small village in Lapland stays alive.

Our guides are local people with an intense desire to share and encourage appreciation for the local culture and environment.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Finally getting to see the Northern Lights glowing overhead was an experience I won't forget, and I am already thinking about how I can get to see them again.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Book now and enjoy yourselves! Don't worry too much about not having good quality outdoor clothing as they will provide you with everything you need. We really enjoyed all of the activities we chose, as did other people who were staying at the same time, so just book whichever ones take your fancy!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The holiday definitely benefited local people - Maya and Mikael seemed to link up with half the people in the village in various ways, from extra support at the retreat, to drivers, to meals at a local cafe. In terms of minimising the impact on the environment, we did fly there, but if we had more time there was lots of information on the website on how to get there by train. They have a dry compost toilet (a lot more comfortable than it sounds!) and make their food from scratch themselves.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was, without a doubt, my favourite holiday ever, as it was for my partner. We both enjoyed the mix of exciting activities with time for relaxation and exploring on our own as well, and it was great fun finding our inner child in the snow. Maya and Mikael, and everyone else who worked with us, were very friendly and helpful, and willing to answer all our questions and requests. The friendly atmosphere was delightful and only added to our enjoyment.
