Delhi to Kathmandu holiday

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

During this tour we utilise a wide variety of local transport, from sailing boats to trains and rickshaws. As well as minimising our impact on the environment by reducing fuel consumption, using local transport enables travellers to experience cultures at first hand, offering greater opportunity for cross-cultural understanding.

During our unique Ganges Sailing trip we glide downstream on small craft owned by the boat captains with whom we travel and a local crew provide backup for our beach camping, thus ensuring a direct financial contribution to the rural communities through which we travel.

A contribution will be made from any booking on this tour to the Kutch Yuvak Sangh Trust, a community based organisation engaged in reconstructing homes and restoring vital infrastructure, such as schools and water supply, damaged in the 2001 earthquake which devastated a huge part of Gujarat. We have already helped a school in the village of Bidada, near Bhuj, where our funds allowed the construction of an assembly hall. Continuing support, from ourselves and our clients is furthering the development of the school.

As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost.

Story of the holiday provider

This small group operator is just celebrating its 30th year and was originally set up to enrich people’s lives through adventure travel. The directors have roots in overland trucking and are determined to keep a pioneering spirit alive. They believe what sets them apart is the strong relationships they’ve developed with local suppliers and tour guides over the years. A tour leader who thinks creatively can turn a good experience into a fantastic one and open up a place so that travellers gain insight into a completely different way of life. They operate in many different countries and try to avoid a blanket approach – their aim is to get customers involved in the projects they visit and to forge lifelong friendships.

Delhi to Kathmandu holiday

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were several. Seeing the Taj Mahal at sunrise. It was more beautiful than I could have imagined at that time of day it looks surreal. Elephant ride as we took the elephants to and from the river for their baths at Chitwan National Park. The baby elephant who escaped out of the breeding paddock. It was after goodies from the onlookers… Seeing the bodies floating down the Ganges. We were told about it but were surprised when we did see them. The sleeper train - now that was definitely an experience…

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take plenty of Imodium as we all at some point got an upset stomach. Be prepared to haggle when shopping. Take plenty of film/memory card as there is so much to photograph. Have nerves of steel or you'll never get across the roads. There seems to be only one rule that the drivers follow and that is 'there are no rules'.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes. We used local transport - cycle and auto rickshaws and local restaurants/cafes. The trip down the Ganges was using the local boatmen so we felt we were helping the local economy on a regular basis.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic. Although I would not go back to those parts of India I am glad I have been there and experienced it all. Nepal also was fantastic and the people so friendly. Tutse the guide we had at Chitwan National Park is definitely worth a mention on his own as he was so knowledgeable and had such a wicked sense of humour.
