How this holiday makes a difference

Reptiles are the oldest form of living animals on Earth and have remain unchanged for millions of years. It is unfortunate that reptiles are looked down upon. There are many reasons for this, it could be because of Biblical reasons or simply because of dangers they present to mankind.

Many facts about these amazing animals are forgotten. Such as the fact that the Nile Crocodile is the most successful hunter on Earth, with an almost 100% strike rate, far more impressive that lions, leopards or even sharks. In African culture many reptiles are not considered as worthy animals and are killed on sight with no further thoughts on the impact on the environment. At this project volunteers will firstly be educated about animals at the centre. After this they can take this new found knowledge and educate other people in the surrounding communities.

Volunteers will actively participate in the following activities:
- Cleaning and maintenance of the park in general.
- Maintenance of the enclosures
- Capture and release of many species of reptiles
- Educating people in the area on the importance of reptiles in the environment The beauty of this project is its location. The reptile project is situated close to the oldest Big 5 game reserve in South Africa . The backpackers’ lodge where the volunteers will be accommodated run daily trips to this park as well as to other wonderful destinations.

The Reptile Park in South Africa was great! It's all hands on and the people are very nice.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorable and exciting part of the holiday was actually getting to handle the reptiles, definitely the Venomous Snakes, such as the Snouted Cobra.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I would recommend anyone going on this trip to read up about the place, and find out what sort of wildlife is around there, it will make it easier to identify the animals.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

When we was called out on a snake call, we always felt like it was helping. Most people there are very afraid of snakes, therefore it made a big difference.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would give the holiday a 10/10, very enjoyable, and would recommend it to anyone.
